Don't you just love it when a company that makes stuff you like comes out as being ethically sound?

What a wonderful excuse to add chocolate tea cakes and caramel wafer biscuits to my next grocery order.

I still think the original tweet was unfair. Whoever posted it must have known the inevitable pile-on would happen.

What a ridiculous comment. It was just a "thanks" tweet.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/10/2021 12:07

@BewaretheIckabog

I’m on a diet but the local food bank will be getting Tunnock’s tea cakes this weekend.
Ooo that's a good idea. I am not going to accidentally eat them either as I don't like them. I love their caramels though.
drhf · 23/10/2021 12:09

Companies that give away freebies expect to be acknowledged.

LGBA never said Tunnock's shared their views; they just said that Tunnock's taste good. LGBA social media did exactly what any social media rep would do.

Oh come on. Are you seriously saying whoever posted it didn't know what would happen?

Yep. Charity is made a small donation, and thanks the donor.

Not really headline news.

Gingernaut · 23/10/2021 13:35

Tunnocks have merch, but the site is so weirdly organised that you have to click every option to see all the products.

I love the beanie.

nauticant · 23/10/2021 13:43

For the first time I went to buy Tunnocks Teacakes at the supermarket. I was vexed at first by what seemed to be a
Tunnock
Excluding
Retail
Fail
by Tesco but I was looking in the wrong section. I also bought Soreen in solidarity.

TeamRex · 23/10/2021 13:49

There are two options -
a) they did know. They could have guessed that on knowing that a LGB charity was given some snacks by a company that anti-LGB activists would lose their sense of perspective and complain. Making this assumption they then have to decide if that's a good enough reason for them to hide the fact that they received snacks for their conference. Strangely enough, they didn't create a charity and hold a conference to hide in a closet.

b) they didn't know. Because despite all the nonsense, the campaign to have charity status removed, the "fuck terfs" signs, it simply was too bizarre to think anyone would complain to a snack company about a gift of snacks to a charity.

Explain to me why you think the person doing the thanking tweet was in the wrong again?

It's odd because I'd have thought that most companies would wish their donation to a charity to be acknowledged in public.

That said, we have the unedifying prospect of Amnesty UK both defending and distancing themselves from the use of their placards to protest FiLiA…

picklemewalnuts · 23/10/2021 13:54

@Chersfrozenface

Public service announcement: Iceland website has Snowballs, milk chocolate wafers and caramel logs Asda website has milk and dark chocolate wafers and teacakes Co-op website has milk chocolate wafers and teacakes

I've fallen out with Tesco so won't be checking their site

That is excellent public service! I'm adding caramel logs to my Iceland basket now. I'd not heard of them but they sound to ace to resist!
Journeyofthedragons · 23/10/2021 14:00

I can't belive the support on here, a feminism board of all places for a company who had an advert banned as recently as three years ago for being sexist and degrading to women.

Waitwhat23 · 23/10/2021 14:03

@KimikosNightmare I have the Peytons and Byrnes cookbook but have never tried tried make the teacakes - I think that might be my mission for the weekend. The snowballs sound good too!

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 23/10/2021 14:08

There's nothing wrong with a marketing exercise. I would not have any issue with Mermaids, as another registered charity, asking for a box of tea cakes and being given them

No, and I wouldn’t have an issue with mermaids saying thank you on twitter either

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 23/10/2021 14:13

I prefer M&S teacakes anyway….

I shouldn’t even be on here 😒

KittenKong · 23/10/2021 14:40

Oh it’s hit the big time... The Daily Record has reported it in its usual top notch journalistic fashion... ‘see they t’nox, thems homa-fobic now’

Firesidefox · 23/10/2021 14:43

Agree. I have ordered some.

This.

How bizarre that people have nothing better to do than get over excited about a donation of food which people ate and enjoyed and which a thank you was quite rightly given.

I’d not seen the ad before, that was bad.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/10/2021 15:09

Curious as to why people think companies give free stuff to events?

Tunnocks make the tea cakes (and wafers) for Ringtons and M&S. Most people swear M&S and Ringtons ones are better. AFAIK they are the same recipe. Ringtons make Sainsbury's, M&S and Fortnums tea (irrelevant, but just thought I'd share)
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 23/10/2021 15:27

iirc, back in the days of Bath Uni. entanglements, weren't feminists accused of attempting to 'gluten' some of the TRA disrupters at an event there? And the WPUK event at Bath (custard creams, iirc).

The donation is being out of all proportion- starting with the opening post.

Don't you just love it when a company that makes stuff you like comes out as being ethically sound?

Tunnocks are being co- opted far beyond what they actually did.

I may not have been clear. My comment was aimed at the people seeking to boycott Tunnocks, I have ordered a vast array of their goods and will enjoy every last crumb.

drinkingcherrywine · 23/10/2021 17:43

Just back from Asda, happy to report that their specialised night in marketing aisle was full of tunnocks everything, (waves to the asda marketing team). I bought loads of teacakes and wafers, even at the inflated prices Grin

Do they do the really small ones?
