This is Mahjabeen Hakimi. She was recently beheaded by the Taliban, having been unable to escape the country before they took over. She was a member of the Afghan junior women's national volleyball team.

According to her coach, who spoke to the press after her family were threatened into silence, female athletes are being actively sought and killed by the Taliban. How is the world standing by and allowing this to happen?

Fuck. Just... Fuck!

And now, who to start lobbying?

everythingcrossed · 21/10/2021 07:50

Oh God, that's horrific. I can't believe that some media tried to promote the idea of a new, moderate Taliban when the Western troops were withdrawing - we all knew it would come to this eventually Sad. Poor, poor Mahjabeen.

risefromyourgrave · 21/10/2021 07:55

This makes me so angry. The US just completely fucked up the withdrawal. If Trump had been in charge of it, he’d have been rightfully torn to shreds. But as it’s ‘Kind Old Uncle Joe’ he gets a total pass.

It’s disgusting how the Afghan people have been just abandoned, and heartbreaking for the women of Afghanistan.

Rest in peace Mahjabeen.

catzwhiskas · 21/10/2021 07:57

Is anyone surprised? This is a Brutal regime and the west should not be conceding anything at this point. When we hear of no acts like this, then ,maybe . But in the meantime women are getting the worst of it s expected. Utterly appalling .

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 21/10/2021 07:59

Oh my god, that is horrific Sad

CooDeGrass · 21/10/2021 08:00

I read about this last night while watching football with my sons, and the disconnect between the lives of those men on the pitch and the fate of Mahjabeen and other female Afghan athletes made me almost physically sick.

There aren’t words strong enough for the horror at what is happening.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 21/10/2021 08:01

Thank you for sharing her name. RIP Mahjabeen.

InvisibleDragon · 21/10/2021 08:03

This is awful.

NomoreSmiggle · 21/10/2021 08:07

Who do we lobby? I doubt my MP will do anything - he’s a Tory

Grumpyosaurus · 21/10/2021 08:10

That is horrendous. That poor young woman and her poor family.

I knew from the off that the new moderate Taliban line was bollocks.

NonnyMouse1337 · 21/10/2021 08:12

Absolutely awful. RIP Mahjabeen. SadSad

andyoldlabour · 21/10/2021 08:20

What good will lobbying do?
Now they are in charge - again - the Taliban do not care what we think about them.
The Taliban are evil, in exactly the same way that Islamic State are evil.
Their belief system is rooted in the 9th century, it is barbaric.
In 1998, the Taliban murdered 11 Iranian diplomats. Iran then mustered around 250,000 troops to invade Afghanistan, but the US threatened to attack Iran if they carried out that operation.
This Wiki article gives a hint of what really happened.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 21/10/2021 08:23

I wish I was shocked and surprised.
She looked so happy in those pictures.

RIP Mahjabeen

MildredsMussaurus · 21/10/2021 08:33

Just horrendous.

It feels like there is nothing we can do. Can't imagine how terrifying it must be for women there.

ThirdElephant · 21/10/2021 08:41

I think it would actually take international cooperation and military force to stop them, ideally before they've had time to fully re-establish themselves. I don't think there's much hope of that though. It is utterly horrific.

I agree with @andyoldlabour. All fundamentalist regimes are evil and anti humanity. But what can we do? Our governments are as complicit as most others, its difficult enought preventing a fundamentalist anti woman regime taking over here fgs.
That poor poor lovely girl, and her poor family. And presumerbly this is happening all over Afghanistan.
I wish I had an answer.

Bellendejour · 21/10/2021 08:53

This is horrifying. I wish I had some idea of what we could do to help these women. It feels hopeless. So heartbreaking.

RIP Mahjabeen

MrsOvertonsWindow · 21/10/2021 08:54

Awful, depressing and terrifying for all those women in Afghanistan trying to survive.
Rest in peace Mahjabeen

This…

Virtually the whole political world is saying give the taliban a chance (mainly because due to the withdrawal there was no other choice) when everyone knew what would happen

Just horrific

ArabellaScott · 21/10/2021 09:00

There are no words. Horror and despair.

RIP Mahjabeen. My heart aches for all the women and girls of Afghanistan.

CharlieParley · 21/10/2021 09:03

Heartbreaking. That poor young woman and all the other women living under Taliban rule. I cannot wrap my head around the thinking behind such senseless violence.

Thank you for the link to that article, ThirdElephant. So to the Talibs she was worthless twice over - as a woman and a member of an ethnic minority.

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 21/10/2021 09:08

That poor woman. I cannot imagine want she went through before her death. My condolences to her family.
