Outcome of my company asking everyone to add pronouns to signatures

My company (a large corporate) finally jumped on the pronoun bandwagon. I’m on a committee of senior people so managed to steer the comms away from making it mandatory to being voluntary. To which our D&I Committee assured me that everyone would definitely definitely do it cos it’s the right thing to do etc etc

This happened a few months ago and so far only 2% of people have added it (pretty much just the D&I Com). I spoke to some younger people today and casually asked if they were going to do it and they all said no, it’s bollocks, no interest etc.

It’s a small victory but I felt very pleased at this! We have a dotted line as an organisation in to a bigger co which is one of Stonewall’s trans ally companies so pleased to have retained this tiny bit of control.

As you all were.

Excellent 👍

Now that made me smile.

Excellent! Gin

Piapiano · 20/10/2021 20:49

That's promising. Under the Equality Act 2020 it would be belief discrimination to make it mandatory so that's a good point to raise if they suggest that again. It's also against Yogyakarta principles and puts pressure on trans people to out themselves at work.

Piapiano · 20/10/2021 20:49

Equality Act 2010

HermioneWeasley · 20/10/2021 20:50

Top notch

AnneLovesGilbert · 20/10/2021 20:51

Good stuff. Well done.

Yes, this was exactly my argument. Not to mention unconscious bias against women (which we are already working hard against, given our female representation at a senior level is terrible, as is our gender pay gap)

I thought it might blow their minds a little to argue that some people have no gender identity mind Wink

Star Excellent!

2% is a great result

BoreOfWhabylon · 20/10/2021 21:02

Well done!

OhHolyJesus · 20/10/2021 21:02

That's brilliant OP, thanks for sharing that.

2% huh, wonder how the D&I will spin that.

writingsonthewall · 20/10/2021 21:04

Urgh. I also work for a large corporate and we've all been encouraged although it's not compulsory. I think about 75% of people have which is so bloody depressing.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 20/10/2021 21:05

Excellent. And so funny that the D&I team are so out of touch with what people really think.

TrainedByDinosaurs · 20/10/2021 21:06

Good news McOrange

Lovelydovey · 20/10/2021 21:08

Well done you.

I’m horrified by the number of people in my increasingly woke organisation who have voluntarily added their pronouns - including senior women. I’m in a minority in not having done so. I’m also regularly pointing out - particularly in anonymous surveys - that the protected characteristic is sex not gender. I cannot understand where this is all coming from.

snoopyfloops · 20/10/2021 21:14

I'm on this particular mission too OP. So far I've convinced my big (famous) company to leave Stonewall, undone a policy to add pronouns and killed a plan to convert loos to gender neutral. Holding back the TRA is my mission and I chip away every single chance I get. Thankfully my CEO and COO are with me.

RedDogsBeg · 20/10/2021 21:28

Kudos to you snoopyfloops, that's an impressive list.

Brilliant. Well done you.

Thankfully none of that nonsense where I am yet but I’ll certainly stand against it if it comes to it.

I feel like we are ninjas, no one talks about it openly for fear of being accused of being a HaTeFuL TeRf but there are plenty of us around!

Well done, OP!

snoopyfloops · 20/10/2021 22:00

I have found that fear of being caught up in a damaging trans row a la BBC, Royal Society, Sussex Uni, etc is more important to our senior team than being 'inclusive'.

Some trans folk at work came forward to say that they had been victims of transphobia. Much Pearl clutching and horror. On closer investigation it turned out that someone had said that biological sex is immutable at a work event. They also said work should pay any employees transitioning costs.

This sort of thing has damaged the TRA in the eyes of the senior exec team.

LizzieSiddal · 20/10/2021 22:07

That’s fantastic news!

I was cheered last week when two youngish, gay men, I see though work, asked me “wtf is all that about” re pronoun email signatures. They just didn’t understand why anyone would want to “out” themselves. I agreed with them and added the disadvantage it could mean for discrimination against women.
