My takehome from FiLiA - do one thing each day

I’m in recovery from FiLiA now - what a weekend. Amazing experience.

The biggest thing that has stuck with me, amongst all the heartbreaking stories I heard, all the inspiring and enlightening discussions, all the maddening ignorance and narcissism displayed by the “protestors” outside, all the solidarity and joy and love shared with women across generational and political divides…… was something that Vaishnavi Sundar said, the filmmaker who produced “Dysphoric” which looks at the impact of gender ideology on women and girls in developing countries youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRU9NIX0AA143z2QKukQcOqS96qriKGyw
twitter.com/vaishax/status/1355134390049751042?s=21

She said - do one thing, every day. And that’s what I want to do. Do one thing, take one action each day, that works towards women’s liberation and against male violence against women and girls.

I wanted to share that on here as I found what she had to say so inspirational but am shit at writing things properly. But she spoke along the lines of, sometimes it all seems overwhelming and hopeless, and you feel like giving up, and you get depressed. But she realised that if she wasn’t doing anything about it, if she wasn’t taking action, then she’d feel even worse about it all! So in that way activism is kinda a little self-care as well.

What FiLiA also bought home to me is how small actions plant seeds, how little things snowball into big things and how many small actions and the efforts of many women together can make real change, so that every small action we each take individually, that may feel like pissing in the wind at times, each petition or crowdfund we support, each tweet we amplify, each letter we send, each short conversation we have with people in our lives, can together support real change.

Anyway, that’s what I want to do. (At least) One Thing Every Day.

Yesterday I wrote a positive feedback comment to the BBC
about the Nolan podcasts, thanking them and a short explanation of how I feel betrayed, as “an LGBT person” that Stonewall now actively campaigns against my rights and interests, and worse that public bodies wholesale delegate responsibility for policy to them. www.bbc.co.uk/contact/comments-feedback/#/Your%20comment

Today, I have donated to a crowdjustice campaign for children conceived by rape to be recognised as secondary victims of the crime. Can’t post the link here as rules but if you search on crowd justice for “ Forgotten victims: conceived in rape” you’ll find it. Sharing on Twitter and here is part of that action too.

Today I also want to send a submission to the FCA consultation on self-ID for reporting of sex on company boards, and hope to find time later to find the details for that and just write a short thing for it

Inspiring! Thank you!

SpringCrocus · 20/10/2021 00:38

I've just spotted a tweet from someone I follow .

Do one thing every day.

Obviously was at FiLiA!

With the hashtag #doonethingforwomenxx

SpringCrocus · 20/10/2021 00:41

Probably not allowed to share, dm me for the link

teawamutu · 20/10/2021 09:42

The hashtag is perfect - no need for another account.

Cwenthryth · 20/10/2021 09:54

I’ve never worked out how to “follow” a hashtag on Twitter.

spring the only links not permitted here are direct links to petitions or crowdfunders. Everything else is fine.

Right I’m not working today, and I resolve that my daily act of feminism is going to be to write a blog I had an idea for. I’m not a writer so no idea how this will go. I’ll get help to edit it I think but need to get the content down myself.

I signed the petition to require nightclubs to thoroughly search people on admission, in the wake of the revelations in the media today of the numbers of young women being drugged in clubs.

Can’t do direct petition link so link to thread on petition forum www.mumsnet.com/Talk/petitions_noticeboard/4377183-Multiple-women-and-injected-with-needles

To explain link it's petition to support Surrey PCC to support women

Cwenthryth · 20/10/2021 14:41

You can post the link on the petitions board here, and then link to the thread, that’s permitted. Or link to tweets about it.

Today I messaged a Fb group about what they actually meant when they said "supporting Women"

PamDenick · 20/10/2021 22:35

Thanks for posting

ferretface · 21/10/2021 14:57

Spoke up about my beliefs today! Got into a largely receptive debate and shared JK Rowling's essay so people can see what she actually wrote.

Donated to Jo Phoenix's crowdfunder a few days ago.

Tbh I don't currently have the mental fortitude to do something every single day about this (I find it so demoralising and depressing), but will continue to do what I can when I can.

Cwenthryth · 21/10/2021 17:31

Nice one ferret Thankyou! Have real conversations with people in our lives is so important.

I got half a blog content done yesterday, I think I’ll work on that more at the weekend.

My action today is to take some time to read, so many feminist books on my to-read pile, being well informed makes us better campaigners.

Also tomorrow is #ComeOutOfStonewall day, my professional organisation is still a member so I’m thinking about how I can craft an email to them asking them to leave. And considering whether I can send it from my work email account or not.

Responded to the FCA & Welsh consultations yesterday. Today I’ve subscribed to Glinner as I’ve realised it’s one of the best archives for the wtf moments
