BBC Article Omits Sex From EA characteristics list

I was pleased to see this being given sunlight but noticed they don't mention sex in the list of protected characteristics. I understand they said the list includes but surely Sex is very relevant to the article so should have been in their list?

Seems an odd one to leave out given the subject of the article

The Nolan investigates podcasts have been quite an illuminating listen. They're looked very closely at how Stonewall has been operating

KittenKong · 15/10/2021 21:19

To did say that Wales has gone head over heels for stonewall.

LizzieSiddal · 15/10/2021 23:39

I noticed that too. I’m going to complain. It shows just how far down the Stonewall rabbit hole the BBC are.

Hoardasurass · 16/10/2021 00:38

Now we just need the BBC to take aim at the SNP/GREEN Scottish government

AnyOldPrion · 16/10/2021 00:48

It does allude to them here:

”Critics of Stonewall's interpretation of the law argue that the term gender identity is too broad and it could undermine sex-based rights protected under the legislation.”

Though it is a pity it doesn’t explicitly include sex in the earlier list.

Still it’s amazing to see such a report from the BBC at all, and that journalists are pushing this subject.

FuriousFemale · 16/10/2021 01:01

Yes it does mention sex-based rights and overall I was really pleased to see the article. It just seemed odd to not have them in the list and I wondered if that was deliberate or an oversight

Good that this is getting sunlight but they shouldn't get away with misrepresenting EA. This is how it all began.

Zeugma · 16/10/2021 10:30

Just to note - the author of that piece, David Thompson, is the investigative journalist who worked with Stephen Nolan on the podcast, and appears in it, so he definitely knows his stuff.

Iirc (sorry, I binge-listened all 10 podcast episodes and now can't remember exactly where I heard it) I'm pretty sure they drew particular attention to the fact that 'sex' is a protected characteristic.

FuriousFemale · 17/10/2021 02:07

@Zeugma that makes it even more weird that sex was left out. I think the recent publicity around ask this is great so I really hate to nit pick but it just seems like such a silly thing to miss out

I've submitted a complaint to the link given above.

Abitofalark · 17/10/2021 21:18

The title of the article: "LGBT charity Stonewall 'dictated policy' to Welsh government"

It states that the Welsh government's policy has replaced 'gender reassignment' with 'gender identity'.
