The impact of TOJ on The Guardian sales

Interesting and recent (i.e. today) Twitter thread asking;

Has anyone else stopped buying the @guardian because of Owen Jones?

Lots of different opinions. I struggled to find any comments in support of him, quite a lot who won't touch The Guardian because of him, others who won't read it for other reasons and plenty who read The Guardian still but skip reading TOJ's 'work'.

The Marketing Director of The Guardian is Kate Davies. I wonder if she has ever identified TOJ as a bit of a liability for The Guardian/her job?

OJ says:

And when they fail to affirm their children for who they are, they risk causing them massive lifelong damage in the form of mental distress and all of its often terrible consequences.

But if he genuinely cared about the mental well-being of trans people he would not perpetuate the idea that suicide is a logical option if the world, or even your parents, cannot be a mirror that affirms every aspect of your preferred perception of self.

Ash is a wonderful young woman.

Why?

Today is the first I've seen anything of Ash and if Ash is supposed to be wonderful, something has gone wrong with the branding because I am not thinking "wow" in a flattering way.

ShagMeRiggins · 12/10/2021 19:37

The Mole at the counter thing—I can’t really get behind making fun of people for being short.

I’m not short, by the way. Nor am I a fan of Owen Jones.

I just expect more from this side of the debate (because we’re better and have better arguments).

donquixotedelamancha · 12/10/2021 19:39

I can’t really get behind making fun of people for being short.

I'm short. I've been asked to speak for us all. We've had a quick meeting and we are fine with it.

It's not mocking little Owen for being short per se, it's mocking him for being little in every sense.

A tiny, petty, shallow, pathetic excuse for a human being who whines and claims victimhood at every opportunity but can't manage the slightest empathy for anyone else.

Wow, that was quick. I must have guessed correctly about the identity of VladmirsPoutine. I appologise, it was only meant to be a joke.

Don't worry, I get the hint- I will not speculate further.

I’m 4’11” and if everything was a bit lower down it would make much of my life easier. It’s really hammered home sometimes that the world is not made for tiny people #wontsomeonethinkoftheshortarses

Deliriumoftheendless · 12/10/2021 20:11

Also donquixote you should have said “we had a short meeting” (ba-dum tish!)

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 12/10/2021 20:14

I thought what Owen and Ash did to that woman yesterday was absolutely disgusting. I know OJ was a prick but this is a new low even for him.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/10/2021 20:24

Pun appreciated :-)

AbandonedCharacter · 12/10/2021 20:27

"Ash is a wonderful young woman."

How om earth do you reconcile this statement with her action's on Twitter yesterday?

KimikosNightmare · 12/10/2021 20:38

Sarkar is a nasty piece of work. I sincerely hope that Sarkar never gets into any position where she might be influencing policy.

I have nothing but contempt for the likes of Sarkar and Sally Rooney banging on about being Communists- safe in the knowledge they will never have to live under Communism. Of course if in some nightmare scenario that were to happen I think it's a safe bet Sarkar would be one of the favoured inner circle.

ShagMeRiggins · 12/10/2021 21:18

I'm short. I've been asked to speak for us all.

Okay, that made me smile, donquixote.

It’s not mocking little Owen for being short per se, it's mocking him for being little in every sense.

I understand it in that sense and agree he’s a small man. Quite simply, though, I don’t think everyone uses it in that way and felt the need to say so.

It’s never a good thing to mock people for things they have no control over. It’s a cowardly way to keep someone down, by going for the obvious.

Petty, shallow, pathetic—he has some control over this. Being short? Nah. Perhaps POJ might catch on...

ShagMeRiggins · 12/10/2021 21:20

This is true. Enjoying the privilege they tell others to “check.”

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 12/10/2021 21:30

I’m not sure LOJ was born when I stopped buying it though.

He was born in 1984. He's not as young as he feigns.

christinarossetti19 · 12/10/2021 21:35

@Toomuchtea

I stopped my sub because of OJ months ago, and told them why. Received no reply.
I stopped mine after their 'Genderquake' series or whatever it was called.

Also wrote to explain why and of course didn't receive a reply.

They published Suzanne Moore's article after that and I waivered, but anything that OJ writes for is beyond the pale.

GothicaAutistica · 12/10/2021 21:58

@KimikosNightmare Agreed.

DdraigGoch · 12/10/2021 22:36

No, I have stopped buying the Guardian because of their rampant trans hostility
This tweet was the first reply listed when I viewed it. The author has a "trans flag" on his profile so I don't quite think that he intended it to read quite how it does. Freudian slip?

StrangeLookingParasite · 13/10/2021 00:41

Sarkar is not just unpleasant but I certainly haven't forgotten her spectacular outbreak of stupidity when telling Julie Bindel she had done nothing for incarcerated women because Sarkar could see nothing on JB's Twitter to that effect.

Dim and vicious, such a winning combination.

NiceGerbil · 13/10/2021 02:41

I saw that situation with the worried mum.

Fucking pair of utter bastards.

As so many told OJ in response.

He and whoever ash is linked to a woman's Twitter, something like 2 MILLION followers between them.

Just some random woman whose life family etc know nothing about. Saying horrible witch based on one tweet.

Leading to her being called well you can imagine. Threats I assume as well.

Not in comments but did either of them think at all that-

Non famous random woman full name and whatever else in her other tweets. Not a stretch to imagine she could be found IE address kids school etc.

That it was bound to get back to the kid one way or another. And then what? I doubt they considered that. And I'm sure if pointed out they WILL NOT GAF. About impact on mother, child, any other siblings, other parent. This being known generally by friends of both etc.

Is the DC out?
If not. Those two have outed. Fucks sake.

Total utter irresponsible fuckers.
