NZ bat for bird of the year: "it acts more like a bird than most of our actual birds"! Is this the best trolling ever?!

Just heard this on the BBC and checked the papers, it appears to be real!

"The announcement caused some consternation among New Zealanders online. “A mammal is hi-jacking the BIRD of the year competition. We want to be inclusive, but …,” commented the NZ Science Learning Hub.
“I love bats, but bats are not birds,” one Twitter user. “It’s adorable. But not a bird,” another said.
Others supported the candidacy. “Who can be mad at a bat running for NZ bird of the year when it acts more like a bird than most of our actual birds? Our only mammals think they are birds. Our birds think they are burrowing mammals,” said one person on Twitter."

Is this in fact the best trolling ever? I hope so!

I think otters were on that list too.

You could have Chicken Tarka. It's just like Chicken Tikka. But it's 'otter.

(And the RC Church said Barnacle Geese came from barnacles and so were fish.)

Perhaps NZ can make the cis-tern the national bird...

Yes. The capybara.

I didn't realise they were on the list. There is good eating on a Capybara and they don't even taste fishy.

Capybaras are too friendly to eat.

Who wouldn't love a guniea pig the size of a labrador?

The capybara female is generally larger than the male. I wish humans were like that.

Rabbits are friendly but delicious. If we only ate rude animals we'd all be eating cats and swans, which both taste horrible.

How do you know they taste horrible? Wink

I've met numerous friendly cats, but rabbits just run away.

When an animal annoys you it's wasteful to just dump the carcass.

Swans taste like mud. Cats are really bitter, like rancid game. Tortoises, however, are delicious.

Well, I certainly didn't see this thread heading quite here! 😂

I can't wait for some of the NZ YouTubers to get this story. I'm guessing they may have a bit more background knowledge...

A tortoise annoyed you? 🙂

That would be silly, who could be annoyed with a tortoise? No I ate that because I hadn't tried one before. Surely we've all had horse, kangaroo or crocodile just to try it? Well it was like that.

The cat and the swan annoyed me (not at once, obvs).

A tortoise once chased me across a friend's garden. Horrible little sod.
