Is the EHRC really getting bolder?

Was very heartened by this tweet on protected characteristics - women and mothers, radical stuff.

The Equality Act protects women from being discriminated against because they are pregnant, including due to pregnancy-related illness, or new mothers.

Find out more about the nine protected characteristics: t.co/JHuCnCuPQb t.co/YKuMWdoJ3p

Good to see facts report as facts, some of the comments after...'pregnant people' type comments are getting really boring 🙄

timeisnotaline · 11/10/2021 22:50

Of course the comments are a shitshow of people thinking they’ve had sex changes and one transwoman indignant they might not be protected when they get pregnant Hmm

timeisnotaline · 11/10/2021 22:51

But, it’s great to see from the EHRC

Hoardasurass · 11/10/2021 22:57

Oh dear I wonder what stonewall will have to say about it

Pretty sure the transwoman one was a joke
Imnobody4 · 11/10/2021 23:00

All this pregnant people stuff is really annoying - it's been established in law that the person who gives birth is the mother.

Given EHRC has a statutory duty to uphold ALL protected characteristics I think this is pretty measly. Where are the cases of then taking NHS trusts to court to uphold single sex wards? Where is their voice standing up for women in prisons? Where is there publicity correcting Stonewalls distortions?

If you click through that individual's twitter feed includes such charming nuggets as:

The campaign for urinals in womens toilets starts here. I'm sick of having to use the sink when the cubicles are full.

That. That in a nutshell is why toilets should be segregated by sex not gender.

Motorina · 11/10/2021 23:07

@TReXX if you click through to their twitter feed then it's either not a joke, or their whole feed is an elaborate joke by a person who has "passing priviledge", is "better ... than regular women" and "true lesbian women find attractive".

I don't think it's a joke.

TReXX · 11/10/2021 23:12

@Motorina

My irony meter is buzzing after looking at their posts, I'm pretty sure it's someone trying to show how ridiculous the whole thing is. Could be wrong of course but I don't think so... I hope not because that would be a whole.new level of bonkers...

I was just watching ITV News, and there was a report about unvaccinated pregnant women and Covid.

They said 'pregnant women ' 7 times in the short report, and 'expectant mothers' too (once) :)

Was nice to hear, but I also think it's sad that it has become so unusual to hear 'pregnant women' these days that it stands out so much when it is used.

I heard an interview about vaccinating pregnant women on R4 earlier (might have been world at one, was driving so not paying full attention) and the guest repeated 'pregnant women' so often it felt like she was making a point. But I'm sure it's just that I was surprised to hear it unchallenged. Made me smile anyway.

Baroness Falkner is relatively new. She intervened in Maya's case as well as letter to Times re Kathleen Stock. There have been quite a number of changes on the Board etc.

They've just run a consultation on their priorities for the next few years.
I'm just hoping she's getting her ducks in a row before they step in more forcefully.
