Flags in the public sector

Back in July, the government slipped in an amendment to explicitly state that only the standard Pride rainbow flag may be flown by the public sector, flying the trans-triangle one is banned.,

Well that is interesting.

FlyingOink · 11/10/2021 22:27

There are so many flags it makes sense to limit it - otherwise the greyaces and pansexuals etc etc will feel excluded.

Although I don't think there's any value in the rainbow flag any more. It doesn't mean anything. It used to be handy to identify a gay pub. Now it is entirely useless.

Does anyone know how I can read this on my phone without having to agree to share my data with them and 3rd parties

MrsOvertonsWindow · 11/10/2021 23:14

And there was me thinking they'd be mandating red flags being flown over all those diversity champion organisations....

Hoardasurass · 11/10/2021 23:35

Is this a UK wide law or just English law?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 11/10/2021 23:38

It really is an ugly flag with the additions. Pastels don't go with bright colours.

What does LGBTQIBLMA+ stand for? I know up until, and including, the I, then I'm not sure.

LobsterNapkin · 12/10/2021 02:53

There used to be quite a few towns near me with bylaws that said government flags only. They've all backed down over the Pride flag, and now are being asked to fly any number of other flags, mainly for causes.

It's kind of a minefield.

Says England. www.gov.uk/government/publications/flying-flags-a-plain-english-guide/flying-flags-a-plain-english-guide You can fly the flags on the list without planning permission. If you want to fly the fugly new flag, it says "Any flag not identified above requires express consent from the local planning authority before it can be flown."

Wasn't there a version of the flag that also incorporated Black Lives Matter?

In addition to the pastel colours, the flag also incorporated brown and black as a mark of being anti-racist? That might explain the BLM bit (not sure about the final A, unless it is for Asexuality).

I could be completely wide of the mark!

Hoardasurass · 12/10/2021 09:42

A is for autism
As an autistic woman with an autistic child I am really angry about being co-opted by them (just like they did with the I)

areyoufinkiddingme · 12/10/2021 14:45

I'm an autistic woman and I don't identify as LGBTQ......+

WTF?

I'm a straight woman and it would be inappropriate for me to barge my way into that community and I feel it would be doing a disservice to people who are lesbian, gay and trans

Surely we know that LGBTQ+ covers people who are black, autistic, disabled, well everyone really but as long as they are LQBTQ. Without a need to put every possible variation in the name. I don't get it Confused but that may be because I'm not part of that community
