Laurel is an amazing trailblazer and everyone is so mean. Obviously no mention of the women who miss out.

Yes. Absolutely.

We are so mean to point out Laurel was overweight, unfit, twice as old as the other competitors and had no chance of winning after a career ending injury in 2018.

Laurel is so brave. Some might call it having a brass neck, but she is soo stunning and brave.

BloomingTrees · 06/10/2021 23:18

But if sports weren’t so systemically weighted against trans people — and specifically transfeminine people — Hubbard would not be saddled with the burden of being the first.

Why transfeminine people ? Transmen don't even get a look in.

Whitefire · 06/10/2021 23:23

They are also systematically weighted against slightly overweight, 40- odd year old women with a rubbish pelvic floor, but look out for me at the next Olympics.*

*Event to be decided in due course.

Fellow New Zealander expressing her forthright opinion of this award to a "trailblazer"

NiceGerbil · 07/10/2021 02:31

I'd forgotten about LH till I read that!

In the article it says LH doesn't want to be in spotlight etc and is shy.

So it seems extremely unhelpful. Hypocritical. To publish a long piece all about LH. When in general the award and Olympics etc have not been in the news or anything for a fair old while. Telling other people to leave LH alone!

That's incredibly dimwitted!

BrandineDelRoy · 07/10/2021 02:38

Laurel did make that heart sign with their hands after failing to lift. I think only women do that. I've never done it, and I've failed aplenty.

Love that woman.

“Otago. Our medical University! We’re fucked.” 😆

anon12345678901 · 07/10/2021 05:25

Why can't LH leave actual women alone? Stick to the male category and understand that is the correct category for him.

FannyCann · 07/10/2021 06:48

Love it, that's given me a laugh to start the day. Thanks for posting OP. Grin

"But if sports weren’t so systemically weighted against trans people — and specifically transfeminine people — Hubbard would not be saddled with the burden of being the first. Even former gold medal Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, possibly the most famous trans woman in the world, wasn’t able to surmount the systemic barriers that prevent trans people from living their lives openly until 2015, despite the fact that she started socially transitioning in the 1980s."

Caityln Jenner opposes Transwomen competing against women on the grounds of fairness. Either the author didn't bother to check or chose to ignore this inconvenient detail.

Oh dear.

FannyCann · 07/10/2021 08:07

despite the fact that she started socially transitioning in the 1980s.

Was that when Caitlin would sneak into her daughter's bedroom and try in the underwear in the underwear draw?

Socially transitioning. HmmSad

Has anyone told Gareth Bale that?

Event to be decided in due course. 🤣🤣 any ideas for what that event might be? My best is the hi-atus hernia jump or Unravelling (Javelin)

quiteathome · 07/10/2021 09:12

Trampolining for the longest without a leak? Could that be our new sport?

ArabellaScott · 07/10/2021 09:14

I do feel sorry for Laurel.

but Laurel shouldn't be playing in women's sports.

I feel MORE sorry for the women that Laurel took the place of.

Normal temperature to boiling in the shortest possible time?
This event could be part of a triathlon in which you have to strip off layers and fan yourself madly with a random household object.

Bellendejour · 07/10/2021 09:58

I look forward to the day these types of articles are analysed as the pieces of incoherent, wildly inaccurate and bafflingly stupid pieces of propaganda that they are.

“How the fuck did these things get published Mum?” asks DD.

“Well...” scratches head, ponders the roots of widespread cognitive dissonance

Etc

VerveClique · 07/10/2021 10:06

I'm pretty puny.

I think weightlifting is systemically weighted against people like me.

In my head I am a really physically strong person!

I've never done this.

Does this mean I'm a man?

Whitefire · 07/10/2021 12:31

It's telling that any criticism of this award is framed as TERF's and transphobia, missing the point that Laurel was not that great (Laurel didn't just not progress to the next round, Laurel didn't even record a lift at all) and that there were many other [more] deserving women.

"How much money did you get Otago University to make Laurel Sportswoman of the Year?"

Very pertinent question.
