I always can't help but wonder if clauses like that are edited in by the subs. Although imagine Catherine could have felt somewhat obliged to make sure that base was covered to avoid the hassle.

It's plausible. I've known a number of writers who complain that by the time something is published the entire slant of a piece has been changed by the editorial staff.

To clarify, Bennett is an Observer columnist but her article was published in The Guardian.
It was published in the print edition of the Observer, but Observer articles also appear on the Guardian website.
