Just got it by email.
Great, nice resource to celebrate LGBT history month.
Until we get to

  1. Trans
Describes people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth.

ASSIGNED, again!

and

  1. Gender identity
Everyone has a gender identity. This is the gender that someone feels they are. This may be male, female or something else (see non-binary), which may or may not correspond to the sex assigned at birth.

I don't have a sodding gender identity.

Let me guess: there’s no definition of “gender”, “male” or “female”, is there? No explanation of what “feeling a gender” might mean? No explanation of why or how “gender” might “correspond” to sex.

Nah, course not.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/10/2021 17:20

So male and female have magically become 'genders' as well as man or woman?

And we ALL have gender identity?

How the fuckety fuck can you 'feel' a gender when gender is nothing but sex role stereotypes.

Gender is not sex!!!!!!

NecessaryScene · 01/10/2021 17:29

They skipped a definition of "gender". Do they mean "sex"?

BreatheAndFocus · 01/10/2021 17:34

Interestingly, that’s a common confusion: muddling up knowing your sex with having a gender identity. I saw someone on Twitter explain trans that way, but what they’re not getting is the two things aren’t the same.

I know I’m a woman but that doesn’t mean I have a gender identity. I’m Me in a female body, and that’s how I know I’m a woman. I don’t have a gender identity because why on Earth would I judge myself by regressive stereotypes?? Why would anyone want to?

And yes, the assigned at birth thing for sex is annoying, and also insulting to the tiny number of people with DSDs who sometimes are assigned a sex. It’s appropriation of that language and I detest it.

Some really unpleasant people in there.

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/10/2021 17:49

I also don’t have a gender identity, they can feck right of with that one.

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/10/2021 17:49

*off

NecessaryScene · 01/10/2021 17:58

Here's a presentation that helped me when I was getting into this stuff, and I suspect many others.

5 years old now, apparently. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun? Hmm

Rebecca Reilly Cooper has a long hard look at documents like the one described in the OP and tries to figure out what they mean.

InspiralCoalescenceRingdown · 01/10/2021 17:59

@NecessaryScene

So many of these things will provide a glossary with no definition of gender, which seems a bit pointless to me.
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/10/2021 18:14

Out of interest, how do they describe gay / lesbian?

NancyDrawed · 01/10/2021 18:30

As she grew up, Christine realised that she was transgender. She had
always known she was female

Surely for accuracy, this should read 'she had always felt she was female' or 'she had always believed she should have been born female' ?

NancyDrawed · 01/10/2021 18:34

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Gay Usually used in reference to men who are attracted to men but also applicable to homosexual women or non-binary people.

Lesbian
Women who are attracted to women.

The glossary is a bit lacking

Thanks for the link, but is there a written version somewhere (or something that covers the same ground in writing). I can read a lot faster than I can watch a video (and the video is over 1h long).

I figure it's worth asking... :-)

Imnobody4 · 01/10/2021 18:36

It's a dog's breakfast. I thought homosexual was banned, it's not in the glossary but creeps in under Gay. It's produced by learning.parliament.uk/en/ and needs feedback, the idea that everyone has a gender identity is simply untrue.

Lesbian - Women who are attracted to women.
Gay - Usually used in reference to men who are attracted to men but also
applicable to homosexual women or non-binary people.
Bisexual - People who are attracted to more than one gender.
Trans - Describes people whose gender is not the same as, or does not sit
comfortably with, the sex they were assigned at birth. Trans includes
a range of gender identities, including transgender, non-binary or
gender-queer.
Straight/heterosexual - Attracted to people who are a different gender; men to women or women to women

NecessaryScene · 01/10/2021 18:47

I don't think there's a direct transcript of that talk, but here are two related pieces by Rebecca.

First a magazine article, then something much bigger.

Gender is not a spectrum

NecessaryScene · 01/10/2021 18:49

gender-queer

Don't suppose they define that? Hmm

I fancy a bit of self-diagnosis.

ComprehensiveTea · 01/10/2021 19:12

@NecessaryScene aaaah, that was her? I had actually seen both before (and loved them). Thanks for the links!

Also, one of the gender is Pizza? How excellent!!!

JellySlice · 01/10/2021 20:08

Religion
Everyone has a religion. This is the religion^ that someone feels
they are. This may be Christian^, Muslim or something else (see Zoroastrian),^ which may or may not correspond to the religion^ assigned at birth.

Makes just as much sense. We all have a religion, after all.

What? You claim you don't? Heretic! Stone the blasphemer!

JellySlice · 01/10/2021 20:09

Clearly my phone doesn't believe in formatting!

BreatheAndFocus · 01/10/2021 20:17

How does someone’s ‘gender’ sit comfortably, or not sit comfortably, with their sex. I’m good at reading maps - am I therefore a man? 🤔

Isn’t that simply saying that if you don’t fit old-fashioned stereotypes associated with your sex, you must be trans? In that case, we’re pretty much all trans, aren’t we?

It’s trivialising gender dysphoria too.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/10/2021 21:11

In the glossary, they only use 'sex' in relation to trans being uncomfortable with the sex they were somehow assigned at birth, but everywhere else where they should have correctly used 'sex' they have used 'gender' instead.

Nice switcheroo there. Swapping the meanings of the two words.

BiSEXual people are attracted to both genders. What about the other 98? Bigots.

Straight people are apparently attracted to a different gender. Which one though? How would I know when I don't even have one myself?

Lesbians are women attracted to women. Great, but what is your definition of women?

ComprehensiveTea · 01/10/2021 22:00

Can anybody give feedback? Because I really really want to say something about the part about everybody having a gender identity. No, not everybody. And it's absolutely fine either way (or should be).

Cailleach1 · 01/10/2021 23:50

So, if bisexual people are attracted to more than one gender, then they could still only be attracted to one sex. If they are only attracted to the various gender identities in people of the opposite sex, they'd be heterosexual. if they were only attracted to various 'gender' identities, but only in people of their own sex, they'd be Lesbian or Gay.

So, saying you're attracted to 'gender' identities means sweet fa.
