Employee engagement survey - gender question

Hi. I’m after some quick advice please.

Just completing our employee engagement survey (which says it is fully anonymous but given I work in a fairly small team, it wouldn’t take a tenuous to identify me).

Question on gender. I’ve answered the ‘what is your gender’ with ‘other’ and added ‘my sex is female).

However the next question is mandatory and asks if my gender is the same as the gender I was assigned at birth!!

I’ve answered ‘prefer not to say’ but also want to add ‘I do not believe my gender was assigned at birth, my sex was observed and recorded at birth as female’.

Is this ok?

I’m a bit scared actually, which is fucking daft as I’m stating facts.
Arghh!

Yes your answer makes more sense than the question

ArabellaScott · 01/10/2021 12:36

I think your answer is fine. Factual and unarguable.

ArabellaScott · 01/10/2021 12:37

I mean, a complete cock might try and argue it, but nobody can really disagree with what you believe about your own 'gender identity'.

Stillcrikey · 01/10/2021 12:38

Thanks both. I’ll press ‘go’ and hope they don’t hunt me down.

Even if you do get "caught" you have made an important point about the conflation of sex and gender and the assumption that everyone agrees humans can change sex. You have a right to disbelieve that, and a right to be concerned that your company apparently believes it to be possible.

MintTeaLady · 01/10/2021 16:02

Do it! I provide my comments on these things in the free text boxes at the end. We were presented with five options for gender recently, including “prefer to self-describe”.

CBUK2K2 · 01/10/2021 23:08

How/why would you care about a stupid survey? How do people get so jet up about this nonsense?

Stillcrikey · 01/10/2021 23:34

Because these seemingly innocuous questions are being asked of thousands of people and if we are complicit in the perpetuation of the ridiculousness of such notions by ‘not getting het up’ then there will be real consequences. Not least for commissioning of services that should be targeted based on sex. And services such as these are exactly what my organisation is required to deliver.
This is not trivial. This matters.
But hey, if it matters not to you @CBUK2K2, feel free to ignore and move on. It’s a free country after all.

@Stillcrikey I complete agree, it’s complete horses shit. Welcome to the club, men have been getting this for decades from feminists.

FemaleAndLearning · 01/10/2021 23:44

I do exactly as you have done OP for everything, not just official surveys.
I don't believe in gender identity ideology so shouldn't be forced into answering those questions.
There should be two questions

  1. what is your sex? With choice female or male
  2. do you have a gender identity? With choices yes or no. If yes then choices non binary, transgender, other (with free text).

I was looking at guidance for survey questions the other week. Gov UK has a section on ethnicity and how those questions should be asked but not on disability, gender reassignment or sex that I could find.
I've been tasked to conduct an EDI survey of some students and I don't want to use our lead organisation questioning. But if I use my own above the data may not be comparable. Though it would be accurate!

@CBUK2K2 getting what for decades?
