Despite the absolute carnival of shite being thrown at us we are amazing.

That we can laugh even through this nonsense is fantastic.

Keep on keeping on. We will win and we will celebrate ❤️

This thread, and others of this type, is why I love this section of Mumsnet.

You are the most wonderful bunch of —dinosaurs— women on the web!

Vaginasaurus · 29/09/2021 08:07

Oh, the strikethrough didn’t work!
We'll end up like the remains of the people on wards who are mocked by the children undergoing death-conditioning in Brave New World - in fact, a fair amount of this sounds more familiar and relevant to the general travel of contemporary events than I'd recalled.

www.penguin.co.uk/articles/2017/margaret-atwood-introduces-a-brand-new-world.html
I just read that introduction by Attwood: "Babies are no longer born, they’re grown in hatcheries, their bottles moving along assembly lines, in various types and batches according to the needs of ‘the hive’, and fed on ‘external secretion’ rather than ‘milk’. The word ‘mother’ – so thoroughly worshipped by the Victorians – has become a shocking obscenity"
I didn't realise Brave New World was that close!

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 29/09/2021 08:30

I didn't realise Brave New World was that close!

I'd forgotten so I must re-read it because it's so on-point. I think that I'd started to overlook it because I was so persuaded by Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death (IYSWIM):

But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell’s dark vision, there was another—slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley’s vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think.

What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny “failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions.” In 1984, Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.

I’ve been hoarding the 1919 sex disqualification act which allowed women to become vets, engineers, lawyers etc. I think it’s about time I threw it out as times have changed and these are nowadays obviously men’s jobs and no one needs this act in there confusing people.
Well as far as I can make out from all the incoherent burble emanating from our opposition government in waiting, if they're vets, engineers and lawyers they're probably NB, or else they're all dinosaurs. Or something. Don't mention cervixes whatever you do. And naice women just don't Do This Sort of Thing. Or want rights. Or loos.

I'm not sure vets are allowed, seeing as vets sure as hell need to identify male and female livestock. OTOH, even the most righteous blue-haired aporagender maverique would be mighty unimpressed if served a mug of tea containing the white fluid from a bull rather than a cow.

I’m hoarding rights with my teeny TRex arms, my current favourite is the 1928 Equal Voting Rights for Women (all women, not just the posh ones with a house), and I’ll be using it to ensure I don’t accidentally vote for anyone who doesn’t like my terrible lizardy hoarding tendencies.

Sexnotgender · 29/09/2021 09:58

This is why I love you all ❤️

I’m not sure a T-Rex could hoard many rights with those wee arms.

My favourite bit of hoarding is the right for women to maintain some access to her children on divorce. It gets right up MRA noses. So unfair of us!

It appears from comments this morning that Mr Lammy thinks it’s possible for a Transwoman to grow their own cervix due to hormones

Perhaps we should help the poor confused dear out by printing off this diagram provided by Dr Emma Hilton and posting it to him?

My mum is a bit obsessive with the cleaning and throws things out all the time, she never kept any of the “tat” I brought home from school but she does have a very large stacking box full of perfectly filed rights. She doesn’t do anything with them but as she says “you never know when they might come in handy”. It’s in the loft next to the Christmas decorations.

Alright. Which one of you vipers has been hoarding all the Science?

You might be able to hang onto that one, so long as you non-binarise yourself and realign your bodily self with your inner manly reality.

Testosterone really does do amazing things to your confidence and self-belief without the tedium of ever needing to check.

He’s just tweeted complaining about journalists focussing on identity politics.

The ratio is beautiful!

In future, instead of asking politicians that pop by for web chats what their favourite biscuit is, I propose asking them to label a diagram of the female reproductive system.

Well, quite. I can't think why this puts me in mind of the fox-killer and is breathtaking lack of insight into fox-killers own interactions with women who disagree with him.

It's not often I genuinely spit my tea out but I did at that! 😂
ArabellaScott · 29/09/2021 13:18

Good call on Brave New World. I read that alongside 1984 (and Zamyatin's 'We') so the three books tend to run together in my mind into a general mush of dystopian horror.

Maybe time to dust them all off and try again. I hoard books like I hoard rights, I should have them lying about somewhere, probably buried deep under a woman's right to register a patent (1768) or the ones I stole from Locris, Ancient Greece, because they looked so useful I couldn't resist:

'A free-born woman may not be accompanied by more than one female slave, unless she is drunk; she may not leave the city during the night, unless she is planning to commit adultery; she may not wear gold jewelry or a garment with a purple border, unless she is a courtesan'
