Last week was a dispiriting one. We need the optimism and energy of Maya Angelou reading her Phenomenal Woman.

Link to text:

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.

When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,

The bend of my hair,

the palm of my hand,

The need for my care.

’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Helena Bonham-Carter reads it well.

I'm sure there's a piece by Maya Angelou for all those moments in life when we need a shot of inspiration. Smile

She came to Lambeth Town Hall for several years and read her poetry. She had the most amazing voice, and extraordinary presence, very tall, very elegant, very strong. But also very kind, she spent a lot of time talking to audience members afterwards, I am sure that many young women were encouraged to write after listening to her.

What an experience that must have been. The sheer warmth and impressive physicality of Maya Angelou and that voice - I would hope that the memory of that would be retained across a lifetime and every time that someone thought of it they would re-experience just what it felt like to have shared that space with her.

My English Lit. teacher introduced me to her about 30 years ago and I fell in love with her instantly ♥️

I think I need to play this most days.

She is a shot of inspiration, humour, good-nature and courage.

Maya Angelou on what it is to be a phenomenal woman and not a collation of stereotypes.
