Y: The Last Man

Just saw on the news - a new series starting called 'Y: The Last Man'. The premise is that everyone with a Y chromosome is struck down by a mysterious disease, leaving only XX people alive apart from the titular 'last man'. I thought I'd raise it on here, in case anyone is interested in watching. It'll also be interesting to see how reviewers treat this idea, given the current climate.

There's a review and trailer here: www.empireonline.com/tv/news/y-the-last-man-disney-plus-uk-release-date-trailer/

The show is set in a world where a catastrophic event has killed every mammal with a Y chromosome on Earth – except for one cisgender man, Ben Schnetzer’s Yorick, and his pet monkey Ampersand, traversing the post-apocalyptic landscape populated entirely by women (and, presumably, trans men, along with intersex and non-binary people).

It's been done before - there's a short story by John Wyndham from the early 60s "Consider her Ways" in which all the men are gone

I saw it suggested by an MRA a few years ago, but his 'point' was that women wouldn't be able to cope without men.

There was a reasonably long thread about this a couple of months ago, pointing out the ridiculous contortions the production team were doing to stop it being transphobic.

Shorter than I thought but I think this is the one, just to link up the different threads:

The only intersex men to survive in this world won't be able to produce sperm, as they will have this rare condition, so it really will be up to Cisgender Ben to keep the human race going:

Oh sorry, he's actually called Yorick. Alas.

Thanks for linking the threads. Yes the first thing that occurred to me is that this is a dangerous concept these days! Very invalidating for some.

I read a sci fi book on this ages ago. It did a good job showing that women are ultimately human and so world peace didn’t happen, end of violence didn’t happen, etc.

Isn't the Y chromosome in a bit if trouble already? Certainly the sperms count is plummeting. Perhaps that's why I see foxes and herons in Cork city , bold as you like. Nothing to do with lockdown - they just know we're fucked so they're moving in.

I think in the source material females perfect cloning technology so that a male donor is no longer required. The whole set up is based around the titular Y - some factions want him dead so the world can continue without pesky men, whilst others see him as the salvation to restore humanity to how it was.

I really can't wait to see how they tie themselves up in knots over all the gender woo that's crept in.

Netflix made a film called "Only" in 2019 where women were being killed off by an alien virus. Somehow managed to avoid being woke, despite being on Netflix! There was even a brief appearance of a trans woman who (shock horror) was still very much alive.

NotTerfNorCis · 18/09/2021 16:01

The title itself is controversial. Transmen would have survived. So how can Yorick be the Last Man?

I knew him.

The original comic books are a good read but it clearly took too long to get from page to screen. Gender ideology was not part of the comics although from memory some women did become male impersonators in the years after the men died.
