Healthcare worker raped paralysed patient

There was a lot of media publicity about this at the time a woman in a vegetative state was found to be pregnant, and therefore to have been raped while unconscious. The rapist has now pleaded guilty. Horrific story.

Predators will find themselves any way to prey and it's so often through the caring occupations that confer a halo on them.

She was pregnant. Did he really think that 'not guilty' had any chance of success?

Absolutely this. Caring occupations have two valuable characteristics for predators - as you say, they confer a halo, but they also provide easy access to victims. Patients are in a very vulnerable position, often weak, trapped, unable to move. (This is why Jimmy Savile spent so much time volunteering in hospitals.)

I suspect there is far more abuse going on in hospitals, care homes and even in ordinary doctor-patient interactions than people realise. The only reason this case came to light was because the poor woman became pregnant.

Yes. There was just a case in my (US) city where a male nurse sexually assaulted a sedated woman who was receiving cancer treatment. It's only that she wasn't as sedated as he thought and raised the alarm that he was caught. I dread to think how often he has done this and not been found out. Absolutely horrific.

I've just had the ghastly Kill Bill scenario thought that perhaps the guilty party suspected/expected that he wasn't the only one raping her.

As for the nurse during the cancer tx. And, yes, she won't have been the only one.

Yes. Almost certainly. And perhaps he was right.

Absolutely horrific. The poor woman was aware and felt pain. Not only did she endure multiple rapes but she also, perhaps, knew she was pregnant and had no way of telling anyone?!
Or if she didn't know she was she certainly felt and endured the pain of labour for hours without being able to ask for help.
She must have been absolutely terrified.

Truely the stuff of nightmares :(

HavelockVetinari · 06/09/2021 10:07

HOW will he only get 5-10 years for this?! Surely a longer sentence is appropriate.

lazylinguist · 06/09/2021 10:09

Horrific. And this man may only do 5 years in prison? Just shows what contempt society has for women and for vulnerable people.

SapphosRock · 06/09/2021 10:13

Oh this is just horrendous. That poor woman. Failed by everyone who was supposed to care for her.

Oh, God, it's awful to think that! Someone else may have got away with it?! Sickening.

I also note, that the family had requested female carers only and yet they ignored this instruction and let this convicted rapist be alone with her 'hundred of times'.

Surely in cases of coma patients, it would be reasonable to have a CCTV camera watching the patient at all times, in the bed and bathroom. It would give the family peace of mind and reduce abuse.
