Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Late to the party: cancelled my AI monthly donation

It took me ages to do this as I've supported Amnesty for 35 years and it never occurred to me that I'd come to disagree with it enough to end my donation. But I read their gender policy page:

www.amnesty.org.uk/trans-rights

and I thought, that's it, I'm done. I wrote a long letter explaining why. So far this summer I've given up the Graun, PP, NOW, and now Amnesty. I have my fingers crossed Action Aid isn't next as I love their work with women and girls.

I expect others have been through this. Suggestions for alternative charities, esp. in the US, would be helpful. I have given one-off donations to a couple and now want to set up recurring donations.

Why do they have to make the fonts 'fun' like its all done especially for teens? Or to mask the seriousness of it all.

TooWicked · 04/09/2021 23:03

I’ve cancelled pretty much all of my news subscriptions and charity direct debits.

Instead I’ve used the money this past year to donate to several crowdfunders e.g. FPFW challenge of the Census, I’ve paid for a copy of “Trans” to go to my MP, I’ve joined the Green Party for a few months to vote for Sharhar Ali in the leadership election, I buy stickers and products from Standing for Women.

If I ever set up regular charity donations in future I’ll be a lot more picky and gather as much info about them as I can, so I’ll follow this thread with interest to see which charities are suggested.

Coyoacan · 04/09/2021 23:09

Everything indicates that all the big charities are rife with corruption nowadays. It certainly doesn't look like Amnesty is at all interested in political prisoners anymore.

But yes, there are lots of worthy crowdfunders and some independent news channels that could well do with some money.

It also looks like women-only refuges are struggling for funds.

Beamur · 05/09/2021 01:06

I think you might be a bit disappointed with Action Aid too. There was a thread a little while ago. Partly about how little of the money raised in this country actually goes where you think it's going and their political stance/erasure of women in language used.

PotholeParadies · 05/09/2021 01:17

I present to you the FWR thread on feminist charities!

Pothole
Brilliant, thank you!

Beamur
Ta, I will follow that up too.

Amnesty Ireland think GC women should be denied political representation and access to media. They were lambasted for this by Iseult White whose grandfather, Sean MacBride was the founder of Amnesty.

Same, I'm just saving my usual charity donations and giving what I can to crowdfunding. If I ever set up a long term donation again I'll be going through the charities aims and charter with a fine tooth comb. No more paying for stuff that actively harms women.
Congressdingo · 05/09/2021 10:38

Argh pressed send too soon, I also give quite a bit more to food banks.

CircularReasoning · 05/09/2021 12:47

Unicef seem to be staying out of identity politics.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 05/09/2021 16:37

I've been following and donating to :
womenforwomen.org.uk/

Their work looks to be women run and focussed and untainted by the demands of white males demanding to centre themselves? (keeps fingers crossed that I'm right).

KittenKong · 05/09/2021 16:39

Sos children’s villages - international charity.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 05/09/2021 18:32

I transferred one of my charity subs to the Mvumi School Trust, as recommended by a GC Mumsnetter involved with fundraising.

I'm contemplating a sub to the Spectator. I used to read the Graun...

It's in the UK, but the Centre For Women's Justice do amazing work. They're the ones who fought alongside Sally Challen's wonderful son for her freedom; they're the ones fighting to have the convictions removed from the police records of the young women in the grooming gangs scandals - convictions given for reporting their own abuse, when children ; they're the ones who took the CPS to Judicial Review over the effective decriminalisation of rape, and forced it on to the political agenda so the Home Office and Ministry of Justice have had to make statements promising to change it. It's got to the point that whenever I see a story about some horrific injustice to women being legally challenged, I look at the bottom to see if it's their name - and it usually is.

www.centreforwomensjustice.org.uk

They operate on a shoestring and are currently looking for a paralegal - even a few small direct debits every months would add up to help them, when their income is fairly low. They are amazing and working on less than £150,000 a year - a lot of women lawyers must be offering a lot of pro bono hours, is all I can say - truly, if you want to know your money is making a massive difference, they are a great bet for any British women.

As with all such things, following their social media, leaving comments and likes etc on posts so they increase their visibility, can be ways even women on low incomes can support them by increasing their profile. We have amazing charities like this working for women, but they are tiny and need our support.

Aparallaxia · 05/09/2021 19:36

Thank you for all these suggestions. Women4Women & the Centre for Women's Justice sound terrific. I'm an ex-pat so still feel the UK is my home turf [spelling?].

In the US there's a very pro-SJ phone company called Credo Mobile. Unfortunately they don't have a plan DH and I can use but they walk the walk as well as talking the talk as they give a percentage of profits to good causes every month, and I've donated to causes they support. They also allow people who are on their mailing list to choose 1 one of 3 (though you can split your vote).

This month the third option is 'Women's March', described like this in the email:

'Women's March is the feminist organization that women in the U.S. have told us they need: bold, responsive, flexible, growing; an organization that foregrounds the leadership of women of color, while welcoming everyone who aligns with our values.'

All well and good. But then I had a look at their Mission Statement which included this paragraph:

'We believe that Women’s Rights are Human Rights and Human Rights are Women’s Rights. We must create a society in which women - including Black women, Indigenous women, poor women, immigrant women, disabled women, Jewish women, Muslim women, Latinx women, Asian and Pacific Islander women, lesbian, bi, queer, and trans women - are free and able to care for and nurture their families, however they are formed, in safe and healthy environments free from structural impediments.'

So another one bites the dust. I'll be voting for one of the other two. Probably Democracy For America.

The Centre For Women's Justice do, obviously, need money, but women who really couldn't afford even a very small monthly donation, and still want to help, can still do so by following their social media and liking, sharing and generally increasing their profile, and therefore the people who see their posts or tweets. Which raises money, too.

I’m genuinely confused. You cancelled because they support trans rights? Really?

Barheim · 05/09/2021 23:18

Action Aid, at least the UK branch, is trans inclusive.

Unicef is against discrimination against trans people (which includes denying we are our gender).

Women for women's justice is against transgender discrimination.

Guess your wallet will be fuller for refusing to donate to charities that fight for trans equality.

MistandMud · 05/09/2021 23:27

Tell me how to support trans rights without prioritising gender over sex, Beauheim. If we treat women as indistinguishable from men, women lose out. Let’s not make female lives harder.

She'll find loads of charities to donate to that centre the needs of female humans, however they identify. But it's sweet of you to worry.❤

Are you in the wrong place…?

Probably thought they were on a feminist board. I get the confusion, though.

This is the GC feminist board. There’s a long long history of feminism that is focused on biological sex, and not historically very much so far that isn’t.
