LA Times Name Calls MN, and lumps mums in w/ Breitbart

Ok witches, guess we're notorious again! LA Times calls us 'anti-trans' and lists MN in paragraph, "The footage was quickly amplified by an international network of right-wing activists, pundits and media outlets, including Breitbart, the Gateway Pundit, RealClearPolitics and TheBlaze, a publication founded by Glenn Beck. Message boards where anti-trans activists gather, including Mumsnet, saw thousands of comments."

Glenn Beck is currently not on my Christmas list, so I'm quite confused which one of y'all sends him holiday cards?

@TheWeeDonkey

Not read the full thread yet but I think the issue is when you take such a hardline stance and refuse to see other views you have to double down and stand your ground even harder even when its clear you're in the wrong because then you'd have to concede the other party has made a good point and lose face.
It's more than just a concession and loss of face. They'd have to face the reality that they have been cheerleading on a generation of children and young people into making permanent, drastic alterations to their bodies based on conservative, sexist and homophobic stereotypes, social contagion, teenage anxiety, MH issues and other unaddressed or ignored social factors. That's a lot of guilt to have to live with. That's why they dig in, close their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears.
EmbarrassingAdmissions · 03/09/2021 15:17

It's more than just a concession and loss of face.

Social psychologists (e.g., Cialdini) talk about the phenomenon of increased commitment in the face of contradictory information. It drives a desire to commit to [X] more than ever to stave off the cognitive dissonance and fear of lacking consistency with a view/perspective that they so publicly espoused behind their own name/persona.

As PPs say, this is their preferred response to accepting the reality that they chose the 'truth telling assertions' of the person at the heart of this and woke dude bro rather than the women and children.

Out of those, I've only vaguely heard of The Blaze. Who is Glen Beck? Do I care?

'As it turns out, #BelieveWomen only applies when the women in question are registered sex offenders with multiple convictions for flashing their penis at women and kids. #Wispa'

A story in three parts.

@Thelnebriati

The LA Times did... said those women who were "offended" and making a "hullabaloo" should seek out a space in keeping with their religion (the only legit reason for 'offence' and 'hullabaloo', apparently), so I'm not that surprised they've doubled down.

Thats so disingenuous of them given;
a) the women were using the women only sauna, and the spa provides a third, mixed sex facility, and
b) Biden/Bostock has made women only spaces illegal.

Its almost as if they don't understand what they support.

I don't think the mixed sex space at the spa is relevant. My understanding is that it doesn't offer the same services, like pools and steam rooms. It's a place to relax and play games or eat when you are done with the other, sex segregated, services.

It's not going to really help someone access the standard spa facilities if they don't want to use male and female areas as well.

Which is fine IMO but it's not true that a trans person wanting spa services could easily access them there.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/09/2021 17:37

Yeah, I was pretty pissed off at being called an 'anti trans activist'.

I just don't want my niece who does martial arts to be mullered by some dude calling himself oh, I dunno, Laurel.

I feel totally betrayed by the Left and the centre, over this and a few other issues. It's as if facts are irrelevant. Comes to something when a former Guardian reader is agreeing with Piers Morgan and Breitbart. Not that I'm saying the Right is perfect either. It's just a shit-show.

EishetChayil · 03/09/2021 18:03

It's ironic, isn't it.

I'm about as left wing as they come. A Marxist materialist.

And now this.

Heh!

Sorry, Glenn Beck is a very conservative U.S. commentator who thinks the new Texas ban on abortion over 6 weeks and the bounty for citizen vigilantes to turn in women to authorities is something, "Every citizen in Texas should be proud of."

He's an enemy of women.

Yeah, we're so similar to him, huh? Hmm
FannyCann · 03/09/2021 18:41

A bounty to turn in women? Seriously? Is that part of the new law?

I don't know how anyone would choose to work as an obstetrician/gynaecologist under such laws. The people men who make them are so depressingly ill informed and ignorant of women's reproductive biology and pathology it makes it very difficult to offer safe early pregnancy care particularly with regard to ectopics and miscarriage.

NecessaryScene · 03/09/2021 18:44

Maybe so, but there are sensible ways of handling this. For this sort of spa, they could say that the full facilities are mixed-sex in certain sessions, and single-sex in others, so they cater to everyone.

I think it's fair to say that the objection isn't to mixed-sex spaces per se. It's to mixed-sex spaces totally replacing single-sex spaces, which seems to be the way that places often try to run things.

Which really seems incomprehensible. Unless you were cynical enough to think that they're trying to force women to use the mixed-sex spaces, and not give them an option to avoid them.

Delphinium20 · 03/09/2021 21:29

Bounties for anyone who abets a woman or a girl seeking an abortion. www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-abortion-law-bounty-hunters-citizens/

So parents of a 12-year-old girl could be turned in by their neighbors, who can get up to 10K for it. Disgusting. And Americans like to think they are so much better than the Taliban.

”I don't know how anyone would choose to work as an obstetrician/gynaecologist under such laws.”

That’s got to be the underlying point of this law, passed by a predominantly male (2/3rds in the State Senate), religious and/or RW conservative legislature.

If you make it difficult enough, those “murdering” docs providing services to the “wrong kind” of women will up sticks and practice in another State.

The majority of those lawmakers will never be directly affected by this legislation. If their children are raped and become pregnant then they have the money to send them to another, more liberal, State to get a later stage abortion.

It's a workaround the law to avoid criminalising the women but providing incentives for anyone assisting women to have an abortion. It's well laid out here by Sarah Ditum:

Sure - but I've seen this said in a few comments now, that the spa also has mixed sex facilities. It doesn't really.

I believe there are spas in LA that are mixed sex though, it's probably one of the better places in the US for such things, being a huge city.

The law and confusing over mixed sex vs mixed gender is the real culprit here I think. The spa is in a difficult position no matter what they do.

Oh, bless, somebody is still in denial about being a pawn of the religious right!

Snugglepumpkin · 05/09/2021 00:09

Why don't they put up a big sign saying "Women, you will have to share your space with Transwomen when getting changed or undressed if you use this Business" then let the market decide?

That way, women & those with children they don't wish to traumatise can choose to stay away if that is not what they want to do.

Of course businesses don't want to do that becase they know they'd get very little trade & then transwomen wouldn't want to go there either.

What sort of man or transwoman insists it is their right to be naked & possibly in a state of arousal around naked women against their will?

@PumpkinSpiceWoman, any chance you could actually engage with the substance of the thread, and maybe consider the undeniable fact that self-ID opens a ginormous loophole for sex offenders to perv on women and girls?

You're not doing yourself any favours by plopping on various threads. You just look like a twat.

“You're not doing yourself any favours by plopping on various threads. You just look like a twat.”

Glorious! So many “visitors” to these boards would do well to be mindful of this!

Helleofabore · 05/09/2021 12:46

I think some of these posters who come onto threads to shame posters discussing the conflicts of one groups rights on women are aware that they are doing such good work for showing up where the hate and prejudice really comes from.

Aparallaxia · 05/09/2021 19:44

My previous post got deleted, not sure why, I was just reporting on the letter I wrote to the LAT protesting at their coverage of the Wi Spa events, in particular their description of Mumsnetters.

I am now feeling nervous in case they publish it under my real name... I know they will phone me before publishing to check I am real and I think I shall ask not to be named. Cowardly, I know, but it wasn't us who got us to where we are.
