Thanks Igneococcus.

The comment about Frankie Boyle is absolutely spot on.

It has been remarkable over the last few years to watch boundary-pushing comics such as Frankie Boyle pivot from rape punchlines to woke cheerleading without missing a beat, and without tempering his viciousness: he’s simply moved on to the new acceptable target now that sexual assault is officially not funny any more.

BraveBananaBadge · 28/08/2021 07:32

Thanks for the share. It's not Robin Ince's week, is it?

Igneococcus · 28/08/2021 07:34

I want to keep calling him Robin Whince, but I bet he's heard this variation on his name since primary school.

What a wonderfully written piece. Thanks for sharing!

The ageism at the heart of the criticism of John Cleese is palpable. I wonder also if some of the people shouting about this are having a tiny chink of doubt about their own righteousness...

IvyTwines2 · 28/08/2021 09:15

The white and middle class criticism really is something, when the loudest voices in this, especially in gender woo, are almost all white, middle class and male, plus a large cohort of white, middle class girls at single-sex private schools, and white, middle class young women in publishing and theatre.

I especially find the "old/middle-aged middle-class white men" thing very strange when it's coming from old/middle-aged middle-class white men.
BatmansBat · 28/08/2021 09:53

I watched a TikTok video where a young black woman was really upset about it all. She felt that white, middle class males were assigning themselves label to be more oppressed than black women.

Somebody on another thread suggested 'Robin Incel'

What has John Cleese ever done for free speech? GrinStar

OperationDessertStorm · 28/08/2021 10:07

The Frankie Boyle pivot phenomena is astonishing. It’s like if Bernard Manning married his MIL.

Jimmy Carr said recently that he’s probably already told the joke that would end his career and it’s just a matter of time before it resurfaces. I hope this is true for the rest of them.

The white middle aged men bagging out slightly older white men in order to stay on the right side of relevance just smacks of desperation.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 28/08/2021 13:16

After Frankie Boyle gave up on picking on disabled children he was a brilliant political commentator. I didn't agree with much that he said, but he said it well.

Now he's only repeating "women shut up" in a variety of ways.

Many men have disappointed me before now, and I guess it was just his turn.

Abhannmor · 28/08/2021 13:38

Another old guy who is sharp as a whip is William Shatner. The wokelords of Twitter piled onto him a few months ago. He destroyed them. Perhaps being 80 gives you that idgaf energy.

What else has he been involved in? I miss everything. Everything I tell ya!

Oh, and I just went on Twitter to see what he'd been saying, and - his account has been deleted. You can do that and reinstate it though, can't you? When you think it's safe to go back into the water...

Do you have a link, I would love to read that?
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 28/08/2021 16:40

That's a really good article, thanks for sharing.

I have never heard of Robin Ince... And I detest the idea that beyond a certain age you aren't allowed to have an opinion.

ArabellaScott · 28/08/2021 16:48

I have a Shatner link, NeeDD! It's not to the Twitter stuff, but this is brilliant, anyway:

He came off the fence on the trans issue with an ill-conceived tweet telling women what to think, because he knows some. It didn't go well:

BraveBananaBadge · 28/08/2021 19:13

[quote ArabellaScott]- here's an article on his Twitter stuff:

What a depressingly bad faith article, I didn't think Forbes was that silly. Although the 'award winning' journalist rings a bell (or alarm bells)
