Tips to Avoid Conversion Therapy

This video is alarming. It warns teens not to trust therapists as they are 'pretending to care about you'. It also tells them to withhold info from the therapists as it will be used against them & gives them tips for running down the clock during the session.

James Esses posted a thread highlighting the many problems:

The presenter makes it clear they have never experienced conversion therapy. Which is blatantly obvious, tbh.

This is just coaching kids into isolation from parents and health professionals, with lots of fairly terrifying psychological conditioning about any therapy other than complete affirmation leading directly to a higher probability of suicide, and basically threats that if the poor bloody kid doesn't obstruct and close down in the exact right way, they will be shipped off to the wilderness and solitary confinement etc.

It's basically a paranoid fantasy. And I say that as someone who has endured conversion therapy.

(And the vocal fry will get right on your last nerve, tbh)

This is so dangerous. Coaching children and young people how to 'game' the system, avoid the people who are there to help them.

NecessaryScene · 27/08/2021 12:34

This is a very good evidence piece for any debate about "banning conversion therapy".

This is what the pink-white-and-blue groups mean when they talk about "conversion therapy".

Helen Islan ("Mimmymum" - the associate of Mermaids who tried suing Mirand Yardley) was retweeting this video approvingly.

Jorriss · 27/08/2021 12:39

Yes I just saw that necessary. Absolutely shocking that someone working for a charity supporting trans children should be pushing this narrative.

....... encouraging children not to trust professionals and parents...?

Anyone else got their safeguarding siren blaring on WTAF?! This is appalling, has anyone tweeted this to Baroness Nicholson yet? She's extremely hot on children's rights and protections.

Helleofabore · 01/09/2021 09:13

What a very dangerous video. How on earth do these two expect this video to actually help someone who is incredibly vulnerable?

ArabellaScott · 01/09/2021 09:26

This would possibly be useful to have a transcript of, actually. I have ZERO time to do one right now but will try to remember. Has anyone archived it? Videos can be tricky.

Datun · 01/09/2021 09:49

I couldn't quite believe it was as the tweeter said it was, but after only watching it for three and a half minutes, it bloody is. It should be illegal. It certainly should not be endorsed by a kids charity, with official charitable status, ffs.

It's difficult to believe.

Holy shit the Twitter responses are so bad. They’re accusing him of abuse and telling him to look at what happens inside “conversion therapy camps” (are there any examples in history of heterosexual “trans children” being sent to those?) even though he says clearly upfront that the video tells children that any therapist who doesn’t use their new pronouns straight away is doing conversion therapy.

This is grooming (no adult can be trusted except adults who affirm the identity) and it’s even worse than that. It’s teaching children to experience normal therapy as trauma.

Helleofabore · 01/09/2021 11:28

it’s even worse than that. It’s teaching children to experience normal therapy as trauma.

yes. And yet, we know that there are many trans people who don't support this. I hope that they are reaching out to the producers of this video to voice their concerns. This propaganda is putting children on the route that there is no way to reverse.
