John Cleese to present C4 show 'Cancel Me'

Apparently, he's going to interview 'cancelled' subjects. He's been quite vocal on twitter about a lot of this and has spoken up in defence of JK Rowling, as well as opposing male people in women's sports.

It'll be interesting to see who he gets on. I think it's also a sign of a turning tide that he's getting to put this on a major channel at all.

He's quoted by the Guardian as saying 'there’s so much I don’t understand', but from his tweets, he understands it very well. His tactic is to question instead of refute, which means people have to actually think about what they're claiming.

This promises to be interesting.

Yep, he ain’t stoopid. Looking forward to it and hoping it doesn’t get watered down and that he gets to make the program he wants to make.

Ironicpentameter · 24/08/2021 12:15

Good for John Cleese. A highly astute person with a logical manner that all can access. He has a wide reach, too. Agree the tide is turning on this. Looking forward to it. I don’t think C4 will water down.

Very Socratic.

PankhurstConnection · 24/08/2021 12:30

Excellent - I'm hoping for great things! No pressure Mr Cleese. Smile

Sorry to be a horrible cynic but how do we know the show won’t come to the conclusion that they were right and he and silly old fuddy duddies like him were wrong?

Yup

Someone's upset. Ouch.

I won't click on a Guardian link but this is encouraging if true. Not an original idea as Triggernometry has been doing such interviews for a while, but hopefully Cleese will have wider appeal.

Oh, that's funny. The man has absolutely no self-awareness.

Well, he's presenting it so I'd imagine he has at least some sway on how the show is put across.

I know it's not the point of the thread but I think it's partly this kind of thinking that's led us into this mess in the first place, and I hold my hands up to being guilty of it in the past!

I used to read only the Guardian and Observer pretty much, and prided myself on not clicking on Daily Mail links.

The whole gender debate had opened my eyes to how I'd allowed myself to be in a position where I listened to trusted sources and didn't read widely any more. I was therefore open to manipulation when those trusted sources got it wrong.

Now, I still read the Guardian, but also the Mail, Times, Spectator, Morning Star, Telegraph etc etc and use my own critical faculties to work out what I think, which is much healthier IMO.

It's important to understand arguments from more than one side, even (perhaps especially) if you disagree with them. I always did think this, so I'm not sure how I ended up in such an echo chamber!

Lols - going on national tv to complain about being cancelled. Doesn't really sound like he is being silenced - quite the reverse.

Cancel culture is just a load of rubbish.

''I am not using my privilege to tell those without it that they are wrong''

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Fucking LOL 🤣🤣

Thanks for the belly laugh, Jo.

NecessaryScene · 24/08/2021 13:30

Cancel culture is just a load of rubbish.

You forgot to put the "LOL" at the end. You need to put that in, or your carefully constructed logical argument isn't complete.

(I think it's like the "QED" in maths).

LOL.

He doesn’t say he is being silenced.

Very much looking forward to this.

I love him so much! Looking forward to this.

Abhannmor · 24/08/2021 13:46

Lol. Always wanted to write that. Pmsl. Grin A woman once told me the best thing about having kids is you have permission to be really silly. It's always great craic when Mishy comes around isn't it. Rofl.

Cancel culture is just a load of rubbish.

John Cleese is in his 80s. I assume he's paid his mortgage off and doesn't need to worry too much about income.

It's therefore a lot easier for him to say what he thinks, unlike people who work in publishing or at arts universities.

He's also male, which means he is far less likely to receive death/rape threats. Hopefully this is going to be looked at on the show.

LangClegFlavoredBananaMush · 24/08/2021 13:54

I just want to enjoy a moment imagining that somehow Maugham is persuaded to come on the show with Cleese, who comes on wearing a kimono and carrying a baseball bat, and imitating his pompous style...

Roflcoptor!

Bryonyshcmyony · 24/08/2021 14:02

My dd18 will dismiss anything he says because he is 80. Ageism totally acceptable it seems.
