Who is going? It's my first time and I'm so excited! The line up of speakers looks great: filia.org.uk/speakers

Thanks for highlighting the speakers I hadn't seen that before. I'm very excited to see a few of my girl crushes there

HummingBeeBox · 20/08/2021 14:51

This looks wonderful. Hoping to be able to go. Do we know which speakers are on which days?

EightiesRobot · 20/08/2021 15:00

I don't think that has been announced but timings were published on Twitter

Others who have been before.... Would I feel ok going by myself? Have never been to anything similar. I assume friendly atmosphere but that most women go with/catch up with friends.

shesellsseacats · 21/08/2021 13:44

Yes, absolutely!

If you don't know anyone there at all, I'd suggest trying to find other MNers in the same position to meet up with there. (Or from any other groups you're involved with).

I went to my first feminist talk totally on my own, and spoke to women in the pub after who've become firm friends over time.

There are also stalls there so there's something to do in breaks if you don't feel like approaching women to talk to!

But, it's different to a party or whatever as we all have something in common, we're there for a reason, you don't need to do chit chat, necessarily. e.g. if you recognise women from a session you've been at, it's easy to ask them what they thought of it, it's a good conversation opener.

Or if there are women you recognise who are campaigning on topics you're interested in, they'll likely want to talk to you about it.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 21/08/2021 13:47

The first FiLiA I went to included a time & place for MNers to meet up. I’m still friends with the women I met there Smile.

Sliceofcherrypie · 21/08/2021 14:00

I'm really keen to hear some of the speakers. I am usually happy to attend events by myself - for social or work purposes but I find politics or any type of activism quite intimidating in terms of not being/feeling knowledgeable. I particularly feel quite green around other feminists. But if ever there was a time to be brave and learn more...

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 21/08/2021 14:51

Would love to go but not able to travel Sad. Hopefully next year.

Do you know if it will be filmed, or available to watch online?

supercritter · 21/08/2021 14:51

Can't wait

cariadlet · 27/08/2021 20:17

Just booked my weekend tickets. I haven't been before but the speakers look really good.

I'll be going on my own which is a bit scary. I'm autistic so can be a bit rubbish with new people but something with a focus is easier for me than having to go somewhere and just make small talk.

There are 2 other large events in Portsmouth at the same time apparently so rooms are filling up quickly. I'd recommend booking whatever you can, quickly!
EightiesRobot · 27/08/2021 22:02

There are suggested accommodations on FiLiA's website

I went on Booking.com and booked a room. The site said that 4 other similar hotels had sold out for those dates but I don't know if they just post messages like that to pressurise you into panicking and booking.

There's quite a price difference between the dates we need and mid-week prices. Sad

Immunetypegoblin · 27/08/2021 22:11

I'm going! Booked an Airbnb this week Smile

MintMe · 27/08/2021 22:19

Just booked for the Sunday. Is anyone else worried it might be targeted?

I hadn't thought about that. I think there's going to be so many women there, that even if a few TRAs did turn up, they wouldn't be able to cause too much of a problem.

There were a few protesters last year but it was all pretty pathetic. The security is always excellent.
Olderbadger1 · 28/08/2021 00:39

Went to the one in Bradford and it was totally glorious. Really really really amazing and inspiring and moving and educational and infuriating and funny and warm and just entirely amazing.

Have booked for this one - and for the party in the evening.

And 2022 it comes to Cardiff. Yippeeeee!
