I thought this article might be worth a read. I’m intrigued how cultural appropriation and institutional racism got caught up with veganism and transphobia.

I've come across this sentiment before. There appear to be so many factions within veganism online but all the vegans I know irl are all on the same side and just trying to minimize the suffering to animals that their choices cause. I cannot see how the recognised definition of veganism could be consider to be CA. Surely compassion towards animals isnt unique to any culture.

This is hilarious. All the ‘woke’ muppets turning on one another in the victimhood Olympics.

Excellent news for the Right. Smile

FreeBritnee · 01/08/2021 15:09

This article gives a more detailed idea of the issues.

This sort of story pops up fairly regularly. When sufficient Woke people are gathered together in one organisation, and without sufficient external Evil people to focus on, then they can start some sort of internal purity spiral/power struggle.

I think this sort of explosion is generally at the point where one faction feels they can no longer retain control, so they dissolve the formal group so the other faction doesn't get it, and produce some sort of declaration of Wokeness to justify the dissolution which they can add to their Woke credential sheet.

This is just like the white supremacist knitting nonsense. It’s embarrassing for the left that this stuff keeps happening with depressing regularity. Can these people not see and hear themselves?

NeedNewKnees · 01/08/2021 16:23

Purity spirals?

lazylinguist · 01/08/2021 16:41

That's one of the stupidest things I've ever read Grin. There have been vegetarian and vegan foods all over the world since the dawn of time. And dishes and recipes have spread to different cultures and been adopted and adapted since forever. What a bunch of hand-wringing woke idiots. Purity spirals indeed.

FreeBritnee · 01/08/2021 16:49

My overriding thought is just how divisive this is. I understand the frustration of young people trying to fight for change within organisations but everyone seems to be an activist and noones a pacifist. Nothing gets done.

Hang on a minute... that second article seems to have nothing to do with the ridiculous cultural appropriation point. It seems to be about actual racism towards members of the board, and in hiring practices!

That is interesting - I read a thing this week about how ethical veganism is now a protected belief, with regards to people refusing the covid vaccine. Just made me think it's probably easier to be taken seriously for that than to stand up for women.

(Not being flippant, I've a close relative falls into that camp and it's made things difficult for years)

AnyOldPrion · 01/08/2021 17:17

Eighty years, and this generation have closed it down because of identifying with oppressivism.

FluffyBattleKitten · 01/08/2021 17:28

I can't make head nor tail of that article.
I do find it disappointing as a vegan though, as v society usually take a moderate view.
I don't like being lumped in with gender ideology though. Me and husband are both vegan and GC. We just are vegan for ethical reasons and it's right and possible for us to live vegan lives.

The vegan society endorsed the vaccine though. An example of their usual moderate stance.

Absolutely hilarious. The website of the ex chair is a masterpiece of word salad. The ex chair seems to think they are an 25 year old expert in pretty much everything you can think of despite not really having any real skills, qualifications or experience.

The level of self indulgence is unbelievable

FreeBritnee · 01/08/2021 17:50

I think ‘activist’ is a career now. It’s all you need on your CV to get doors to open.

I couldn't really understand either of them, but this seems quite usual with this sort of thing.

I did pick out that someone used the n-word, which is totally out of order. And their hiring processes were probably discriminatory? But they have taken steps to address this but they're not satisfactory?

I dunno, I think I'm coming down with a headache so that might be affecting my reading comprehension.

BraveBananaBadge · 01/08/2021 18:05

So they have fluffy it has been pointed out in reports eg:

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/vegans-exempt-compulsory-covid-vaccines-workplace-b948403.html%3famp

MattDamon · 01/08/2021 18:06

Zuri said they resigned before their motion for the charity to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign in support of Palestine was put to vote, but they believe it will fail as they are already “being labelled as anti-semitic”.

Pushing special interests like above, it's no wonder there was friction. I have special interests too, but I wouldn't push them on a group meant to represent all vegans.

That and 'influencer'
Beam me up Scotty.

korawick12345 · 01/08/2021 18:16

From the article
'Zuri's resignation letter states they had been 'naive' joining the council in 2019 as a 'multiply marginalised trustee, being black, queer, disabled and working class'

She really is trying to win protected characteristics top trumps isn't she.

PickAChew · 01/08/2021 18:19

Is it just me who got stuck at a giant cleavage shot in that second article?

Nearly, though I wish I had because I feel none the wiser having read all of it!

WildishBambino · 01/08/2021 19:17

Here's the actual resignation letter. This person has gone full Titania McGrath.

Unfashionable · 01/08/2021 19:25

I got about a quarter of the way through that letter. It’s a masterpiece of self-victimising woke bullshit. I’m sure the Vegan Society is devastated to have seen the back of that individual.

The British Left really is completely & permanently fucked if that 🤡 is representative of its young activists.
