This piece from Sonia sodha is excellent on how people who said all the right things & saw themselves as progressive, allowed terrible things to happen

The parallels with how local authorities are enthusiastically supporting the erasure of women’s rights in the name of being progressive are quite stark

SEVEN members of the Bullfinch gang that raped, prostituted and sexually abused young girls in Oxford have today been handed sentences totalling 95 years.

Judge Peter Rook sentenced five of the gang - brothers Akhtar and Anjum Dogar, Mohammed Karrar, Bassam Karrar and Kamar Jamil - life sentences.

Judge Rook said that the gang had put their victims through "sheer torture" by subjecting them to abuse which was "truly evil".

Condemning the men to long prison sentences following their years of abusing six girls, he said:"You have been found guilty of a series of sexual crimes of the utmost gravity, the exploitation and abuse of young highly vulnerable girls in the Oxford area over a very long period of time.

Wauden · 01/08/2021 15:44

@Theeyeballsinthesky
That is what happened in Oxfordshire when the girls were not believed and the local authorities did not want to appear xyz.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/08/2021 15:45

That's such a good article - I hope it gets shared everywhere. Especially in the corridors of all those convinced they're on the right side of history angels while openly removing safeguards that prevent grooming and predatory behaviour towards children

Theeyeballsinthesky · 01/08/2021 15:57

Exactly Wauden - people were afraid of being seen to be ‘prejudiced’ and because of that, ignored what was staring them in the face

Excellent article. I think we can imagine what this may apply to:
‘However, for their modern-day equivalents, who put abstract creed before material reality, Lambeth should serve as the ultimate warning.’

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/08/2021 16:36

It's an excellent article, and enraging.

JoyousAsOtters · 01/08/2021 22:42

I was just coming on to post this. Another excellent piece from Sonia Sodha. It highlights exactly why it is essential that safeguarding comes first and applies equally to all, no matter what.

ArabellaScott · 01/08/2021 22:43

Heartbreaking, god, those poor girls.

Sonia is on fire.

ArabellaScott · 01/08/2021 22:45

' People who feel inclined to pat themselves on the back for being on the side of the angels can be no less blind to horrors unfolding on their own patch and their creed offers abusers an easy way to signal virtue and evade accountability'

ChattyLion · 01/08/2021 22:52

Sonia Sodha consistently writes great articles, this one is painful to read, what happened to those poor kids. Her point is absolutely right about safeguarding.

Severncity · 01/08/2021 22:54

An excellent article. Should be shared far and wide.

littlbrowndog · 01/08/2021 23:20

Safeguarding. No one should be above it

Girl guiding and the rest of them who seem to think that the magic word trans gender stops any sort of safeguarding should read this

The looked after children.

Not looked after. Not cared for. Just vanished

Thank you Sonia.

GNCQ · 01/08/2021 23:23

Holy crap.
In the Guardian?
The same Guardian that couldn't even mention any of this or even Cologne for so long?

Or seeing it's a Sunday is it really The Observer even if it says Guardian everywhere? Quite confused.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/08/2021 11:03

The Observer.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 02/08/2021 11:11

I'm so pleased that Sonia Sodha is still writing.

I hope this means that very public attempts to remove her there, and in her capacity as a trustee elsewhere, have failed rather than rumbling on in the background.

IheartJKR · 02/08/2021 11:56

The Brookes case review is the most horrifying review I’ve ever read. Full of minimisation and gaslighting. It is a DISGRACE.

Culminating in the end comment where Myers, wanted to recognise the voices of the abused girls….

It ends

Top tip - if you feel someone is not safe - tell someone , you are almost certainly right.

Tip tip yourself Myers….. try listening. You were all told repeatedly and you ignored the girls.
