Not sure if this has been posted already but thought it was a great summary/timeline of how we got to where we are today. Its by Francis Aaron, who does those great songs about transgenderism. He’d originally wrote all this in separate tweets but has now put it all together so it’s easier to read.

Good thread. I think there are a lot of other factors at play too - for example, the loss of the music scene, something which provided generations of teenagers with a place to meet up, bond and explore styles and which has now almost entirely disappeared, and the loss even of public spaces like shopping malls where kids used to hang out in the real world rather than meet up in the airbrushed unreality of digital space. The role of Tumblr, fandoms and slash fanfic is a really unexplored issue too, but TV and film fandom is the first place where I really started to notice people calling themselves 'trans', far too many, and too suddenly, to just be organic.

And the rise of crowdfunding sites. These are allowing teenagers and young people, too young to be serious wage earners (and with work, generally comes maturity) to fund surgery outside of the checks and balances of family or the NHS.
