@Igneococcus
Have you seen the comment piece by Margarete Stokowski on trans rights in the Spiegel CharlieParley? You just reminded me of it mentioning Germany.
Just read it. Typically confused and minimising of concerns. This bit actually annoyed me
die »Vornamens- und Personenstandsänderung muss mit einer einfachen Erklärung beim Standesamt möglich werden
(Translation: The changing of one's name and status through a simple declaration at the registry office must be allowed.)
The way this is presented as a basic human right in the context of German naming laws is misleading. It's almost impossible for all German citizens to change their name. This causes issues for a variety of people, not only those wishing to transition.
The Green Party and the Liberal Party recently had a law proposal also containing this demand about name changes rejected in the German Parliament recently. If it ever passes into law, the trans community will have rights no other German citizens have. And I predict that right will be used by all those not otherwise allowed to change their names, including convicted criminals and fraudsters as no safeguards are planned at all.
But if you point that out, they'll tell you it will never happen.
Until it does.
