Obscene costumed volunteers handing out summer reading at Redbridge library

A library had a man in a rainbow monkey costume, with a dildo penis and a fake exposed butt, handing out summer reading books.

Look at this obscene sex clown mocking and terrorising local Muslim women:

twitter.com/HasAhmed_/status/1413931013340807172/photo/2

The library is, of course, apologizing about it now:

twitter.com/RedbridgeLibs/status/1413975910433366020

But during the event, they thought it was pretty funny:

twitter.com/turtillachip/status/1414255270038016009

What is happening? Why should parents going to the library's summer reading program worry that THIS is what they'll see? The website for this troupe of "performers" clearly shows this monkey performer with his fake penises inch from children's faces. There has been no vetting. No safeguarding.

And there'll just be an apology, another "isolated incident." Of course, the local Muslim women and girls know exactly what this library thinks of them now, and what may happen to them if they choose to even walk nearby. Do we think they're going to want to go in?

[quote ScreamingMeMe]But Mandingo means penis.

Or is there another defintion?

I think it's more likely to be this:

Different than the literal translation given by the Brazilian Portuguese dictionary, the word Mandinga has its own meaning in the capoeira world. The Aurelio dictionary translates the word mandinga as a “magic” or “spell.” In some senses that meaning applies to capoeira, but in a different context.

"Mandinga in the capoeira environment means, amongst many things, the hidden power that one has to disguise their real intention and to trick the opponent. It is a way to invoke some forces to blur the opponent’s vision of reality almost like hypnotizing him/her into a trance-like state so that they can’t see what is coming. It can also be magic like a trick that confuses and distracts the opponent. However, much more than any of the above meanings the word mandinga have a very special meaning as a way of referring to capoeiristas that are very expressive in their game and know how to embellish their jogo* with beautiful and impressive gestures. These gestures are sometimes very theatrical, sometimes like a primitive dance, and sometimes imitating all kinds of animals (e.g. monkey, jaguar, snake, eagle, bull, and many others)."

From here:

So in summary ^hidden agenda" clearly

Why was I deleted MNHQ? I didn't realise it was controversial to suggest that some people wanted Kink added to the LGBTAQ+++, and that this addition of kink, often visible at events like pride is causing a backlash against the LGB.

So men dressed as monkeys showing their bare arses and having penises hanging out of the costume, belonging to a company called Mandingo, have got nothing to do with Mandingo meaning penis?

Got it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/07/2021 22:44

They have altered their site to remove the monkey pics, it is archived here: archive.li/qbyk8

Datun · 11/07/2021 22:44

I mean, after this shit show, they should be putting out a press release saying it's got nothing to do with the slang for penis, and you will never, ever see anything like that at one of our shows again.

TurquoiseBaubles · 11/07/2021 22:46

So who is reporting posts on this thread (and a similar discussion on the WiSpa thread) and getting them deleted?

It says a lot that women discussing safeguarding and inappropriate behaviour of adults in front of children have to be watched and censored Hmm

It's Mandinga, with an A, not an O.
Datun · 11/07/2021 22:49

From that archived site:

Wolf Pack

The pack is here to protect, hunt and have a good happy tail wag, This traveling group of wolves cruise the town, sniffing howling and looking for the ideal candidate to be their new master Behind their imposing and terrifying appearance there lies a kid friendly, intelligent and cheeky canine ready to be stroke and fetch.

Ffs

They are ideal for rural festivals, children’s events and family fairs.

(It's written below a picture of a rainbow monkey with a schlong, of course.)

It’s Mandinga not mandingo
Datun · 11/07/2021 22:51

Yes, I realise that.

To me a misplaced vowel isn't much of a coincidence

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/07/2021 22:52

It kind of reminds me of a lot of the wink wink nudge nudge drag queen names.

Try swapping out the A in can’t with a U and you’ll soon realize that swapping 1 vowel makes a lot of difference in meaning and whether or not something is family friendly. I disagree with the costume choice but some of the stuff written here has been ridiculous
Datun · 11/07/2021 23:01

And for the record, I think it has got fuck all to do with lesbians and gay men.

It's to do with trying to make a 'movement' out of LGBTQ and all the other endless initials which have absolutely nothing in common.

And, also for the record, there is already a massive backlash against lesbians and gay men, as a result of transgender ideology.

I thought it was confined to lesbians, until I read some foul homophobic stuff directed at gay men.

No-one, at least here, thinks otherwise.

I thought the Mandinga were a west African ethnic group.
Datun · 11/07/2021 23:04

Peoniesandpeaches

Be that as it may. But I shall remain sceptical until proven otherwise.

We have had drag queen storytime with names like busting cherry and flow job.

All pretending that they mean something else entirely. And all being booked, quite openly, by libraries to perform in front of children. With kids crawling all over them, literally, all over them. And highly sexualised adult content on their websites, for any kids to access after the show.

Scepticism is a fundamental tool of safeguarding.

And what about the bi’s or is it ok to decide that they are perverts too? I’ll grant you this that those costumes had nothing to do with the LGBT.
Voice0fReason · 11/07/2021 23:05

Once you have normalised drag queens as appropriate entertainment for children, then this looks like fun to some adults.

Datun · 11/07/2021 23:06

Gosh, doesn't all that straw make you a bit itchy? Especially as I was talking about L and G in the context of being targeted.

I haven't seen the backlash against bisexual people. Although it wouldn't surprise me.

In many languages changing an O to an A at the end of a word would turn something masculine into something feminine. In this case it changes the meaning altogether. I just read the text about the founder of the company and it is a South American woman, so I think the conspiracy theorists here need to hold off until the situation has been properly investigated/ reported. A lot of the work is in a traditional carnival style and actually rather lovely.

Obviously someone has taken an extremely dubious and offensive decision over the Redbridge library visit. As a member of the LGB community I regard it as homophobic to link the rainbow flag (much as I hate it) with obscene public acts. Particularly obscene acts apparently designed to stir up alarm and potentially hatred in Redbridge, with its 25% Muslim population.

dyslek · 11/07/2021 23:11

Women (and men for that matter) have the right to ask questions when child safety is in question.
There must be no sacred casts, no one accuses the campaigners who exposed priest abuse of being anti catholic.
LGB people are NOT served by this attitude.

As being LGBT nope. As being poorly written and stupid sure. Didn’t see any penises on the pictures of the wolves FYI.
