Letting athletes who grew up as men compete in women's sport is unfair

Probably the most accessible article I've read to dat.

The extracts from Helen Joyce's book are very readable - I hope that she has an appropriate uptake and audience reflected in her book sales.

I sent this to a friend this morning: so many things in it were news to her. She’d assumed transwomen were all effeminate gay men: the article has peaked her.

I'm halfway through HJ's book (preorder arrived a bit early). I can't put into words how great a book it is. It is a well written, well researched, well constructed page-turner. It's everything you'd expect from someone as clear-thinking as HJ. I hope it is extremely widely read.

JenPack, I get the impression you are in the U.S. How will your child be funding this proposed surgery? Might you be able at least to cause a delay by restricting finances, to give some space for reflection?
I expect other posters here will provide more expert advice, including where best to begin your own thread, so as not to get tangled up in or derail this sports-focused one.

Right, thank you! I landed here because of my devotion to Helen Joyce, but will move to the right spot as soon as I figure out how. Yes, we're in California, which is an American island of sanity in all things political save this one. She won't be able to get free birth control, but testosterone? Not a problem. In a darker mood I'd say something about two-for-one...

JenPack · 12/07/2021 04:35

p.s., I've picked up my ball and moved to a new thread which I'm calling ROGD daughter turns 18: now what? Thanks and apologies for barging into this one!

Helen Joyce has a wonderfully calm, matter-of-fact writing style that makes everything clear. She's the same when she's talking: supremely logical and clear-headed. I hope we'll see her being interviewed on mainstream media because she's an excellent communicator — somehow manages to communicate complex information very cleanly.

FemaleAndLearning · 12/07/2021 09:46

This subject continues to confuse me. Who were the women unfairly dismissed that she refers to?
