Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

We're going to ask about sex!

The organisation that I work for is rolling out a new platform and as part of our demographics collection we are going to be asking about sex not gender. The director leading on it announced in the team meeting today that as gender is a social construct we are not going to get into that discussion we are going to sit strictly within the bounds of the law.
I suddenly realised that I've been worried about this for the last year since the idea of the platform was first posited.

Is it bad that I'm shocked?

oxalisRed · 08/07/2021 15:28

I'll share that shock with immense relief.

Excellent!

Good news :)

Imnobody4 · 08/07/2021 15:33

I had to read that several times to be sure. It's really incredible that we should feel such relief.

Highwind · 08/07/2021 15:33

I hope the Director gets open support for that decision and doesn’t cave in to a pile-on from the woo-crew.

SirSamuelVimes · 08/07/2021 15:35

Amazing!! You must feel so relieved. I was ridiculously happy when I joined a new company a few months ago and saw that their equality policy correctly lists sex as a protected characteristic, not the inaccurate gender.

I now have "Let's talk about sex, baby" as an earworm Grin

This is great but it does make me think of a joke. Phone rings in an office.
"Hello, I'm calling from the Ministry of Labour. We'd like to get a count of the employees at your company, broken down by sex."
"Uh, well, I suppose we have a few. But more with drinking problems, I'm afraid."

Very good news, OP. And like Highwind, I hope the Director gets open support for that decision and doesn’t cave in to a pile-on from the woo-crew.

Or the another joke: old actuaries never die, they just get broken down by age and sex.

Excellent news, OP. Good to see a company sticking to the law and collecting meaningful data.

ChattyLion · 08/07/2021 18:02

Good for your work!

TheArtfulCodger · 08/07/2021 18:04

Now that's progressive!

olivethegreat · 08/07/2021 19:11
