This advert shows repeatedly whenever I scroll this board. I can’t decide if I’m being trolled or subject to subliminal advertising! Either way, I feel they are wasting their money here. Is it just me?

Anyone else seeing this ad?

I just ignore. Don't need help to look like a woman. Admittedly it is a very wrinkly, going grey, doesn't give a shit about clothes as long as they function, hasn't slept for a week, dragged through hedge backwards, woman of the autistic variety, but a women non the less.

Why aren't you using Adblocker or similar?

Because I’m a Luddite and I don’t know how!

I’m getting ads for garden power tools. Which is right up my street tbh.

CardinalLolzy · 08/07/2021 09:07

It's Space NK's tv ad. I don't care if male people want to look feminine - it's a shame that the optics are now superficially bound up in other people's misogyny but anyone should feel free to wear the make-up and clothes they want.

It's mildly cringe that loads of companies are now doing this of a sudden having used stereotypical females for decades, I suppose it's still a bit eye-catching - but I think there's an increase in non-stereotypical models in general right now which I do appreciate (while realising it's for the same clicks/ money as any other marketing campaign! )

PaleGreenGhost · 08/07/2021 09:14

Taking the ad at face value and choosing to believe there is no underlying malicious intent...

Human males find it much easier to maintain the ultra low body weight required by the fashion industry. I'd rather see gender non conforming males in these roles than vulnerable teenage girls on the verge of an eating disorder. In fact an environment with no images of "desirable" females would be an utter relief and could kick start the beginning of the end of the objectification of women.

Neither males nor ultra thin teenage girls work well when selling me clothes or underwear though. Nothing against either but I need to see how clothes work on hips and waists and boobs.

umbel, just Google! I'm using AdBlocker Plus on a MacBook Air. It's free to download and install. It'll be available for PCs, too. It blocks all ads. For those sites that require you to watch ads (Channel 4 for example) you can just tick a box and the ads will play whenever you're on that particular site.

So the new subsection that is solely about sex and gender is getting targeted advertising like this? Interesting…

DaisiesandButtercups · 08/07/2021 09:21

Yes I have been seeing that add and did wonder about it. Got the garden power tools now, much better Grin

Good point PaleGreenGhost, I am sure that fashion designer would much rather work with tall slender young men. I heard one say once that curves are awkward and they really don’t want variety, the point is to show off the clothes and they are looking for models to fit the clothes not the other way around.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 08/07/2021 10:17

The problem though, is that the fashion and beauty ads are still targeting girls and women, just using bodies and faces that are even more unattainable (for self-evident reasons!). If targeting men/men who state they have a gender identity and who seek to adopt the beauty standards that are currently applied to women, then no problem (if undesirable for other reasons).

Agree that the increasing likelihood of having a range of bodies and faces is a good thing, though also agree that that itself is frequently also a marketing ploy!

And now there are these micro doses of testosterone that can help them achieve that very look isn't there. Yes, I am being extreme and provocative, but the amount of dismissal to the negative effects of binding on threads this week and young posters coming on previously saying how all their NB friends are micro-dosing and they have had no negative effects at all, has made me very sad.

Summerleaves · 08/07/2021 10:47

Meh, no problem with this advert.

It's just a bloke trying to look pretty.

Nothing wrong with that.

LizzieSiddal · 08/07/2021 12:04

I keep getting ads for Prick News. I’m going to stop clicking any links to them.

NotBadConsidering · 08/07/2021 12:42

The point is that MNHQ complains that discussion around sex and gender hurts their advertising revenue. Clearly there are targeted ads that are specific to this forum now, more so after the split? That means that rather than hurting their advertising revenue, it’s possible that it’s been made easier for certain advertisers to advertise in a place that suits them. And in a targeted fashion that could be considered goady/not in the spirit…

Deliriumoftheendless · 08/07/2021 12:47

Nothing wrong with pretty men but the model in the ad ain’t as pretty as me 🤷‍♀️

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 08/07/2021 13:49

It did make me raise my eyebrows to see that ad here, and reminded me of not so long ago when I had nothing but Ann Summers ads on FWR. I assume it’s trolling. As am definitely not in the market for scratchy nylon lingerie.

CardinalLolzy · 08/07/2021 14:10

It's not just on this forum, I've seen the ad in Chat, so I doubt it's targeted at a lower level board. The full tv ad has a range of ppl on it.
I used to like pootling around in Space NK but haven't been there for years!

Lordamighty · 08/07/2021 15:13

I happily walk straight past Space NK now, no need to buy their overpriced stuff any way. When will these retailers ever learn?

What is your problem with the advert?

Personally I have no objection to seeing feminine men or masculine women.

WeeBisom · 08/07/2021 15:27

I've seen this advert, and I thought it was a feminine man? I was surprised at it being a skin care ad, because I thought that his skin wasn't particularly spectacular.
