Hi all, the Misogyny Working Group have created a survey around women’s experiences of misogyny.

You may remember that women were left out of the Hate Crime Bill while cross dressing males and drag queen’s were protected. I think it’s so important women’s voices are heard for this group. Also, it would be great if you could share it with any woman over 18 years old.

On a positive note Flow Job - the drag queen who was taken into a primary school to read children stories by Mhairi Black, SNP reported that he had never experienced any drag queen phobia or hostility on public transport until after he went into a primary school and parents felt it inappropriate- I can’t see why a fetishised, sexualised, parody of a woman would be inappropriate for primary school children 😳

Is this specifically for Scots? It wasn't clear to me. Maybe would be worth posting on the Scotsnet board www.mumsnet.com/Talk/scotsnet

Hmm. It asks for examples then asks if not reported why not. I could give a range of examples but didn't because I would worry my response would be dismissed if I did.

Hi ErroltheDragon, it doesn’t seem to specify who can answer but I’ll try to put it over to the Scottish thread (I didn’t even know there was one!).
Hi Tibtom, I think putting anything in is helpful, there’s such a variety of misogynist behaviours - “slut-shaming”, name calling at school (I think this is so common so getting younger women to complete the survey would be helpful) men calling you “a bitch” for rejecting them in pubs, men putting their arm round you in pubs and pestering you etc. These are just examples. A lot of that stuff does go unreported. In my younger days when I was out in pubs and clubs my friends and I experienced loads of this type of stuff as I’m sure loads of women did. This does shape you in some ways and causes fear and alarm at times and it would be good if it was criminalised in some way to change public attitudes. If you were being called racial slurs or being treated differently because of your race the venue would/should act on your behalf but with women it’s accepted. I was born in the 70’s and racist, homophobic language was widely used but when that became unacceptable in the mainstream people’s attitudes changed. The death and rape threats and low level misogyny directed at female public figures or women on Twitter also needs to be addressed as it affects all women in some way, just like when women are raped or murdered - it keeps us “in our place”. Many women have experienced male violence and low level misogyny can be very triggering. Sorry for the ramble - thank you for reading if you got this far.

@GreenSunfish

Hi Errol, do you know how to repost this in the Scottish thread, thank you
I think if you start a new thread there that copies your OP, that would be fine.

Either that or report your own post to MNHQ and ask them to move it for you?

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2021 08:31

I'd start a new thread if I was you, but worded a bit differently to reflect that perhaps not everyone was aware of the hate crime bill in Scotland. And I'd leave out the part about flow job which isn't directly relevant to the survey on misogyny.

GreenSunfish · 07/07/2021 08:31

Hi Errol, thank you,I’ll try to do that. You pointed out the last thread I started had already been covered too with the link for the petition- it got 12,800 signatures which was great. Thanks again

I'm glad there was a good response to that.

GreenSunfish · 07/07/2021 08:37

I’ve just asked to get the thread moved over but yes you’re right-I’ll reword it with different info.
