The Thoughtful Therapist's gov petition has had a response:

"We will protect free speech, uphold the individual freedoms we all hold dear and protect under-18s from irreversible decisions.

We will ensure parents, teachers and medical professionals are able to safeguard young people from inappropriate interventions and are clear that this ban must not impact on the independence and confidence of clinicians to support those who may be experiencing gender dysphoria. We will be working with stakeholders, including medical experts, to ensure we do not inhibit people seeking support."

Can’t tell if that’s good news or not!

I really think that LGB should be separate from T to make this clearer.

It looks as though they get it. I would expect them to take great care with this one so that it can't suffer unintended consequences such as being subject to Stonewall Law

OhHolyJesus · 06/07/2021 19:24

That reads well ahead of the conversion therapy public consultation due in Sept. Keep an eye out for that one.

teawamutu · 06/07/2021 20:10

Really does, doesn't it? Especially the bit about no irreversible decisions for under-18s.

ChristinaXYZ · 06/07/2021 23:30

I think cautiously pleased.

Yes I think it’s good and clearly stated with the under 18 and irreversible decisions part.

Came here to post about this.

'We will be launching a consultation, which will provide experts and those impacted by conversion therapy with a formal opportunity to feed in views.'

Sounds like there will be input from more detransitioners and maybe the decision to ban puberty blockers in Finland will inform the consultation.

One thing that really bugs me about this, though, is the way every response includes something along the lines of 'conversion therapy is an abhorrent practice' etc, as if we don't know, as if we support giving gay men electric shocks and lesbians corrective rape.....

...... And there is never a clear distinction between sexuality and gender. Its so conspicuous by its absence, seems that could be deliberate.

Precisely. A ban on "conversion therapy". Well, since the trans lobby have mangled the meaning of "conversion therapy" I'm at a loss as to whether or not this is good news...

Cautiously optimistic as a PP said.

PickAChew · 07/07/2021 07:14

So it's not just my pre- coffee brain that couldn't make head nor tail of some of it.

@PickAChew

So it's not just my pre- coffee brain that couldn't make head nor tail of some of it.

Blame the TRAs. They're successfully managing to obfuscate the issue by pissing around with the English language.

Does conversion therapy mean medical intervention? Or does conversion therapy mean avoiding medical intervention?

I hope to God it's the former. That would be my understanding of conversion therapy. And it should be banned for under 18s and replaced with watchful waiting, therapy and counselling.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 07/07/2021 08:00

They need to elaborate on that now that the language has been muddled in line with the agenda of change agents who want this all to be so contentious few people will scrutinise it.
