A British man, who identifies as Korean, has spent many years - getting multiple surgeries - so that his exterior appearance match his internal identity.

He has been persistent in his identification, over a number of years. He has had (I think) 18 surgeries to affirm his identity.

I am shocked at the harsh reaction he is getting when coming out. You would almost think, that people don’t actually believe that you are what you say you are…

Sorry if there is a thread on this already!

Oh dear. Well for starters he doesn’t look remotely Korean and should ask for his money back. The bridge of his nose is very high for one thing, he doesn’t have an epicanthic fold, his skin tone. Just so many things. He’s also been socialised as a Brit and you can’t up and decide you’re a different ... ethnicity or (in the case of some dysphorias) a different biological sex.

I wonder how homesick he’d feel if he went to Korea. Does he even speak Korean? So many questions.

Naz2009 · 04/07/2021 05:33

I saw a post on this few days ago on social media and done quick research online as I thought it was fake news. I see he is in love with a K pop Korean singer jimmi.
He wants to be like him. He has been to Korea many times and does attempt to speak the language. Has even made a Xmas song!
Korean people and British people have both shown him negativity. Which is sad, as we are living in a time where we are accepting people for whatever identity they choose to be.

IndecentCakes · 04/07/2021 05:45

I'm sure Kim Jong Un will let him move in!

aweegc · 04/07/2021 05:49

I think they's a they not a [male pronoun]?

This person has effectively been excommunicated. I feel sad for them on that front - being cast out by your own must be really hard.

But perhaps it just demonstrates that Be Kind, Be Your True Self etc actually mean Agree With Me - Always - Or You'll Be Cancelled.

Who knew?

NonnyMouse1337 · 04/07/2021 06:05

I don't understand why the #BeKind crew can't just.... be kind. Sure, the guy has mental health issues but it's his decision to have so many operations to 'align' his 'inner Korean' with his outer body. I suppose there's the ethical questions to be asked of the plastic surgeons who operate on him, but ultimately who is he hurting?

Is he asking to be granted Korean citizenship on the basis of his transracial identity? That's the only conflict I think of at the moment. He should have to go through a naturalisation process like anyone else, but apart from that I really don't see what the big deal is.

Of course it's a slippery slope when you allow people to identify as something that they are not and indulge in lies to prop up their ego, but at least these #BeKind people should be consistent in their acceptance of all kinds of trans* identities.

BatmansBat · 04/07/2021 07:05

I think Oli is non binary

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.comicsands.com/amp/white-influencer-backlash-nonbinary-korean-2653568549

I saw some of the early comments…

“Why is it always white people?”

“Na, he not one of us, he is Korean”

I find it very hard to know who is joking these days. I think I even found some comments that denied that they were Korean but was telling people of for misgendering them.

I don’t understand why this person is getting so much hate. Obviously they have a strong, internal feeling that they are Korean. And how do we define Korean anyway?

DaisiesandButtercups · 04/07/2021 08:04

I assume Oli is “getting so much hate” because people are being made uncomfortably aware of their cognitive dissonance by Oli’s combined transgenderism and transracialism.

One is stunning and brave, one is disgusting and offensive but in fact they are both basically the same thing. It obviously makes some people extremely uncomfortable and so they attack the source of that discomfort - poor Oli who can’t fathom the logical inconsistencies of queer theory and trans ideology and doesn’t understand where the problem is. We are all entitled to be validated by the whole world in our beliefs about ourselves whatever they are, right?

Illogicalmadness · 04/07/2021 08:30

I don’t understand why this person is getting so much hate. Obviously they have a strong, internal feeling that they are Korean. And how do we define Korean anyway?

Think carefully about the implications of that last sentence & what it would mean to an actual Korean person.

IWantT0BreakFree · 04/07/2021 08:39

@DaisiesandButtercups you’ve hit the nail squarely on the head there

OhHolyJesus · 04/07/2021 08:39

I do feel sorry for Oli, obviously Oli has some kind of mental health issue or personality disorder and no one should receive death threats.

'Cultural appropriation' as Self ID is very different to wanting access to opposite/single sex spaces though, offensive it may be but Oli here doesn't pose any direct threat to anyone with his personal confusion and the surgeries. I think the Drs should be investigated but Oli appears harmless to me.

If Oli got a job as Head of the National Society of Korean History or some other Korean org it would be similar to the Rachael Dolezal scandal but Oli isn't basically just self harming with the surgery because of his obsession with a pop band.

BatmansBat · 04/07/2021 08:48

@Illogicalmadness don’t get me wrong. I find it offensive. But not more offensive than someone with a penis and a history of sexual assault in a women’s prison. But one is accepted 🤷‍♀️. It is all about internal reality for the Twitter people I thought. What do you think?

BatmansBat · 04/07/2021 09:04

I am also wondering why it is so offensive to wonder how we define Korean when it isn’t offensive to wonder how we define women?

PhiRhoSigma · 04/07/2021 09:05

@DaisiesandButtercups says it exactly as it is.

No amount of surgery can truly 'trans*' you, except superficially. But he's not harming anyone by this (except maybe himself!) so why all the abuse? I would never dish out that sort of vitriol, no matter how deluded I think people are. The cognitive dissonance must be hard to deal with, revolutions often devour their children.

I don't think the surgeons complicit in all of this sort of thing come out smelling of roses either.

BatmansBat · 04/07/2021 10:38

The thing is, we have perfectly standard definitions of woman and Korean. Now the world is being unravelled and we are told that the definition for woman no longer is valid.

I am starting to wonder if racial /cultural appropriation is the next thing?

As OHoly says, someone self-identifying into a race/culture is often “only” offensive. Sometimes they take jobs/positions.

But males identifying as women are currently offensive, take women only positions (women’s lists, women’s sports) and are in addition dangerous (women’s prisons and shelters).

I really cannot see how the Twitter mob can live with this cognitive dissonance.

It alarms me that the irony of the quoted post isn't immediately obvious.
Illogicalmadness · 04/07/2021 10:49

@Batmansbat I agree that the appropriation of the female sex has extended to race now. I don't know how long it will take when people will wake up to the mind fuckery and gaslighting that's going on.

Tal45 · 04/07/2021 11:33

It reminds of the guy who wanted to be just like a ken doll and then more recently decided he was a woman. I think these people are desperately unhappy, desperately confused about who they are and looking for something to fix all all their problems. They desperately need help IMO.

Freespeecher · 04/07/2021 11:34

Rachel Dolezalesque but not quite as big of a minefield as they are not claiming to be black.

BitMuch · 04/07/2021 11:45

Oli compulsively wanting to look like Jimin is called Erotic Target Identity Inversion.

Provincialhousewife · 04/07/2021 11:48

There seems to be a fundamental confusion between identifying with something and identifying as something. I feel sorry for Oli though.

Most transwomen don’t look remotely female either: that’s why it’s even a thing, and why TWAW is needed.

The analogy here would be that transracial rights activists would viciously abuse and threaten cis-Koreans for raising concerns.

PineappleCakes · 04/07/2021 12:01

@Freespeecher

Rachel Dolezalesque but not quite as big of a minefield as they are not claiming to be black.
Excuse me? Why is this case not so big because they're not claiming to be black? Are we once again top-trumping one race over another? White - Black - Asian - East Asian, at the bottom?

It doesn't matter as much because...?

This is as irrational and unacceptable as Rachel Dolezal, or any person thinking they can dress up as, or even medicalise themselves into, the opposite "gender".

Fromage · 04/07/2021 12:04

I identify as a person who thinks Oli is an utter bellend.

HighNetGirth · 04/07/2021 12:49

The attention-seeking is key. Oli doesn't just get on with life in the identity they wish to have. Oli has grabbed the world (well, Twitter) by the lapels and is screaming for unconditional agreement, acceptance and praise. No one ever gets that.

Ritascornershop · 04/07/2021 13:47

Maybe this will be the Emperor’s new clothes that the TWAW believers need.
