US women's team lose pay discrimination case

Has this been discussed on here? Seems like it happened some time ago but I just saw a video about it now. Turns out, they actually got paid more than the men, because they were offered the men's deal and rejected it in favour of one that included employee benefits that the men don't receive. So yes, per game they received less, and less bonus for winning, but they received some huge benefits as a base that the men don't get.

They must have known this. They must also have known that they rejected the deal that the men had. Seems like a massive own goal.

Happened a while ago I think, unless there have been new developments. Forbes article here explains it:
www.forbes.com/sites/evangerstmann/2020/05/04/this-is-why-the-us-womens-soccer-team-lost-their-pay-discrimination-suit/#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Women’s%20National%20Soccer%20Team%20has%20been,lawsuit%20alleging%20pay%20discrimination%20based%20on%20their%20gender.

It also explains why equality for women is not always a good thing, fairness is what we should be fighting for.

"it becomes increasingly reasonable to ask whether society should be gender segregating sports at all any more. The military doesn’t. And, acting awards are also beginning to move away from giving separate awards to men and women. Gender segregation in sports is becoming increasingly anachronistic."

Yea right.

How do you work out this was "unfair"?

The women's team come across as a bunch of whining brats.

aliasundercover · 04/07/2021 11:20

That’s kind of my point, the team were asking for an unfair settlement.

As far as I know, the women's team generate a lot more revenue than the men's.

@TheSlayer

As far as I know, the women's team generate a lot more revenue than the men's.
Are there numbers on this? Certainly the team is more popular, so more merchandise bought and more people watching games, however, the latter does not directly translate into more revenue, TV rights are complicated and USA soccer do not get 100% of the revenue from that, FIFA always has their finger in the pie.

And anyway, it seems the key complaint was that the men would have received 3 times as much for a WC win than the women. Which is an incredibly daft complaint. Not only because we learned this is because they had other benefits, but mainly because FIFA would pay USA Soccer vastly more for the men winning than they do for the women winning (because the men's WC generates a lot more revenue).
