Bishop of Liverpool seeks to expunge male and female from marriage

I am not sure what I think of this - I think he is coming from an acceptance of gay marriage, which is great in an of itself, but there are so many attempts to erase sex at the moment I instinctively don't like this however well meant. I would rather a pro-gay-marriage bishop sought a new marriage service, write in conjunction with gay and lesbian Christians, and then commissioned a literary figure to write their ideas into something beautiful that could be really valued for generations.

All a bit before hand as the CofE have not got any where near accepting gay marriage yet.

You'll be unsurprised to know that T issues have much greater traction in the CofE than homosexual couples being able to marry.

There's a few married trans vicars who have transitioned and there's been some hand wringing about how they're in 'same gender marriages' and paving the way for change. But, y'know, looks suspiciously like in the church, the men get to stay at the top of the pile and gays, lesbians and indeed other women should hush now and make the tea and sort the flower and nursery rota out.

There was a fuss, I think it was last year, where a transman minister was criticized by a conservative Christian for being in a same sex relationship while being a minister.

The controversy from the progressives wasn't that it should be acceptable to be in a lesbian relationship and be a minister - it was that this wasn't a lesbian relationship, because transmen are men.

But the progressive church doesn't support conversion therapy and is totally accepting of LGB people. Apparently.

My arse

It would be the end of the Church of England and the birth of the Church of Woke.

I actually think, like many organised religions, the CofE is still an overwhelmingly patriarchal and solipsistic institution. I don't think God/Goddess has a sex or gender, and for long enough there hasn't been equality between men and women in any Church, despite the lipservice paid to it.

However, this proposed change would be hasty. It would be a knee jerk reaction to a social condition (the new push for everything to be Woke) that may/may not last any reasonable length of time. If it pushed this change of language and meaning through, wouldn't it be going against the words in the Bible that Jesus said? Or are we throwing the Bible out, too, or worse recreating it in our own image? In which case isn't the Church destroying part of its own raison d'etre, as a universal, eternal institution?

It's lose/lose for the Church either way.

Didn’t R4 hand a trans minister doing the Easter readings last(?) year. They really made it all about them, which I thought was distasteful (you really shouldn’t compare yourself to Jesus).

Bergdorf and others are very fond of using spiritualized language about trans people. They are 'divine' etc.

I mean, crack on, say I. The sooner this quirky belief is categorized as just another misogynist religion, the better.
