RationalWiki anti-pseudoscience site

I’ve just discovered this site. It says it exists to challenge pseudoscience and crank beliefs. I typed in ‘transgender’ to see the GC explanation of this term that I was sure must follow. Now my brain is well and truly mashed.

RationalWiki is as reliably rational as the atheist community is reliably free of pseudo-religious ideology.

Some people have denounced one sort of woo and swiftly filled the gap with another.

It's well known that Wikipedia is mainly men writing the stuff.
Rational wiki is probably more so.

So what do you expect. Sadly.

Why?

Well men have more time for this stuff and aren't noticed and hounded probs.

SmokedDuck · 30/06/2021 03:03

It's largely the product of people into the Skeptic movement, which tends not to be the most rational of movements.

It is male dominated for sure though I can't say that I find men more likely than women to support gender sillieness - rather the opposite really.

I had the misfortune to stumble across it the other day.

This is what they have to say about “trans exclusionary radical feminism”. rationalwiki.org/wiki/Trans-exclusionary_radical_feminism

It’s a hard read if you are interested in any level of rigour over sources, or dislike reading sneering misogyny presented as being progressive.

Some people have denounced one sort of woo and swiftly filled the gap with another - exactly this endoplastic.

There’s a large group of skeptics and atheists who are so pleased with themselves for seeing through religion, they can’t conceptualise that they’ve fallen for another religion. The sputtering fury when they’re asked the difference between a gender identity and a soul! Because only stupid people believe in a metaphysical entity that can’t be seen or measured that lives inside people, shapes their consciousness and guides their actions…oh, wait… er..um…STFU T*RF!

Poking around Rational Wiki in other areas, it's very strange. On topics like metaphysics, or Platonism, or the philosophy of science, it has almost nothing to say. All topics that you'd think might be quite important to someone interested in rational discourse.

Atheist and Skeptic organisations have been captured for ages, RationalWiki included. I wonder if Maria MacLachlan, Andy Lewis or anyone else have ever written anything long form on the subject?

Andy has written quite a lot on the topic- the above is a sample, there are linked articles, too.
