Quote about identifying into oppressed class

I recently saw a quote here (probably from Twitter) about gender identity being the only area where an oppressor class is celebrated for identifying into the oppressed class.

I thought I'd saved it but have looked for ages and can't find it. I'm pretty sure one of you wonderful women will have at your fingertips and it would be much appreciated.

I thought Lisa from the Deptford Women's Project put it well (of the Goldsmiths activists who tried to bulldoze their way into her organisation and caused merry hell when they were told to wind their necks in):

We are now informed that transgender people are being routinely abused (mis gendered) and should be protected above all other marginalised groups. All that has changed is privileged students have adopted a set of gender identities that allow them to be considered marginalised.

Not this either, but I like this:

If you can identify into a demographic that has been mistreated throughout history by your own, then demand that that demographic validate you, accommodate you and include you, AND have everyone bending over backwards to show they support & believe you...
You are not oppressed.

This was the quote from Lucy Mcdonagh of the Deptford Project on Feminist Current. Not sure if it's what you're looking for

“That’s what ‘self-identify’ means: anyone can say they are anyone… So, rich, privileged people can claim to be marginalized.”

If you can’t identify OUT of an oppressed class, then you can’t identify IN.

There was one I thought I'd saved but can't find. Something like 'women are the only oppressed group expected to allow the oppressor to identify into the group, and then centre them in all we do'.

I think the whole of Pulp 'Common People' reworded to sex is also apt.

talkinboutit · 29/06/2021 07:49

Thanks everyone. It isn't any of them sadly but Valancy's comes close.
It was only a couple of days ago I saw it and it's frustrating that I now can't find it.

Perhaps it was in a Facebook post? I have spent two hours trawling through but can't find it in my likes on any of the usual suspect's feeds.

I'll post back if I find it (it was a good un) but in the meantime if anyone has anything similar please do share!

"A while" not "two hours"

Slight exaggeration courtesy of voice activated text

The quote was good but I'm not that obsessed Confused

The one I saw was a Facebook post. I think we're thinking of the same one!

There was one from way back about running yourself a nice deep bath of someone else's oppression and having a wank in it (but a lot more elegantly put than that!) I must see if I can dig that one out again as it totally nailed the dynamic.

Councellor Sarah Fields talks about the declaration of sex based rights 25 May 2019 “You can’t identify into an oppressed class as you can’t identify out of one” Posted on Mumsnet previously “You have an ally on Leeds City Council” ...Sorry on iPad and it won’t let me post direct link but pretty sure this is it. Brilliant Speech
