www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/06/26/cbbcs-trans-messaging-damaging-children-says-mother/

Mother says she feels her son was groomed into taking hormone blockers. The article also mentions Genspect, a support group for parents founded by Stella O’Malley.

It’s good to see CBBC and the BBC, the NSPCC, Childline and Mermaids all being mentioned.

Shame that they need to be, though

LazyHorizon · 27/06/2021 00:55

Does it say further into the article which CBBC content she’s referring to? I don’t have a subscription but would be really interested to know.

TheHandmadeTails · 27/06/2021 01:08

I Am Leo. I’ve c&p a couple of paragraphs -

The mother said: “The influences are everywhere. Who knew that you had to protect your children from CBBC or Childline?”

Both the BBC and the NSPCC, which runs Childline, have come in for criticism for providing a one-sided view of transitioning.

In one CBBC documentary, I Am Leo, one of the doctors at the Tavistock Clinic was recorded saying hormone blockers simply “pause” the body and do no harm – a claim which is disputed with some experts saying they are life-altering.

Thanks Handmade

Slight tangent but anyone who hasnt watched I Am Leo really needs to. It is shocking. The dr on camera talking about the pause button is the head of GIDS, Polly Carmichael.

Now sure about the quality but this should be watchable

Follow up when Leo starts testosterone

Winning the BAFTA for children's "factual" in 2015

There were some posts about the Childline message boards a while ago - beware!

So, when is cbbc going to do a documentary on a detransitioner, then?

FlyPassed · 27/06/2021 09:15

Good question, @rabbitwoman. We know they've got Keira Bell's details...

OhHolyJesus · 27/06/2021 09:40

I watched the CBBC documentaries When Mum Becomes Dad and When Dad Became Charlotte.

Absolutely heartbreaking for anyone watching who has an ounce of sense. Everyone else gives it a standing ovation.

OhHolyJesus · 27/06/2021 09:42

Oh and BBC Bitesize recently had two 'lesbians' - one had disabilities and they talked about their life as a family. Only one of them was male so it was deeply homophobic to suggest that it was a same-sex couple. Of course complaints fell on deaf ears, although I do wonder if the level of complaints has maybe doubled since they started with gender ideology in children's programming. It would be interesting to see a report on that.

BillyCotton · 27/06/2021 10:35

It's like the BBC has been applying the Stonewall points system to its CBBC output.

[/quote] I didn't realise there had been a follow up. Thank you for posting the link; it's really worth watching.

I remember seeing in the Tavistock board papers "I am Leo" being mentioned when they are discussing marketing opportunities. They were talking about the difficulties of the service expanding so quickly, whilst actively seeking to attract more custom, and talking positively about the opportunities following from "I am Leo" .

NancyDrawed · 27/06/2021 17:42

I hope that Leo is okay, it must be unsettling for any adolescent to be thrust into the public glare like that, especially as a poster child for how straightforward and not at all experimental this all is.

I haven't heard anything about Leo recently (and I suppose why would I? - Leo obviously has a right to privacy and I respect that) but I was a little surprised that he was not more prominent in discussions around the Keira Bell V Tavi juducial review to give the opposing view to Keira's.

saltedcaramelchocolate · 27/06/2021 17:56

The BBC is also showing this on Wednesday. At 10pm though so not aimed at children.

Genspect- new organisation with a very impressive team behind it.

Something weird happened to GB News on my TV when this was on. My TV just put up a GB news logo and changed back to the news programme as it finished. Weird.

SusannahMartin · 29/06/2021 01:59

The youtube link of GB News is available

2Rebecca · 29/06/2021 14:22

It is still odd that it went off on virgin wifi during the trans segment

OhHolyJesus · 29/06/2021 23:09

I think Michelle Dewberry could have asked more about Katie's transition, as in how current was the information being shared there by Katie? Keira's story is far more current, I imagine with up to date information. Was Katie a child when medical treatment was applied?

Stella was fab though, really getting the point across that you don't need a 'gender' specialist to treat someone who has a mental health issue around their sexed body. This new org sounds really great, thank goodness this is all be talked about so parents can access proper support from qualified therapist.

I would perhaps be more likely to steer a child towards a professional for treatment rather than towards a support group that comes with a ready-made agenda.

Wasn't Stella also involved with Thoughtful Therapists alongside James Caspian and James Esses?

womanity · 29/06/2021 23:35

It’s a shame Dewbs finished up the segment by saying if you don’t support them then suicide, which isn’t at all what Stella OM said.
