The Royal Academy have removed Jess' work from their shop due to a handful of complaints that she's 'transphobic'. If you want to support Jess her website is here.

So sick of these utterly craven organisations. I hope she has a legal case against them for discrimination.

@inmyslippers

The times have run an article about it. Can't see it behind a paywall
Can't see it, can you link and I'll post a share token?

@NoToast

Not surprised really, I know their shitty values. As a student in London my boyfriend and I paid to visit an exhibition there. There was absolutely nothing at all wrong with our behaviour (we worked in a field like museum studies so this was home turf for us). He was followed throughout the exhibition in every gallery by a security guard who was up close and invading his space every where he went. When the boyfriend challenged politely but firmly that they were making him uncomfortable, the guard started shouting at him and was abusive to him based on his colour. It was shocking. We left. If I'd been more savvy I should have asked for my tickets refunded but to be honest we just got out.
Off topic, but I had a really similar experience a few years ago at the RA with a female security guard who was incredibly rude, kept accusing me of touching an exhibit (I hadn't) and then kept shoulder barging me when I was looking at something else. Where do they find their staff Confused?
SharonEllis · 17/06/2021 17:14

I've written to the RA as well - and bought a beautiful piece off Jess's website. Please follow her on social media and give her all the support you can. Its well worth looking at her blog to see what she has actually said. Is anyone aware of exactly what transphobic views she's been accused of?

YellowFish12 · 17/06/2021 17:18

I've gone for the heritic postcard bundle

NoToast · 17/06/2021 17:19

Thanks Purgatory, I was embarrassed I'd gone off in a bit of a me-railing rant but was cross after looking at their website.

Can't believe everything crossed had similar. That's shocking.

I've dug a lot in the garden this month but next month I will buy a patch.

The usual, nobody can actual metamorphose. Sex is real.

Men are men, women are women, etc etc.

You know, facts, science!

Ah that's the telegraph. I have a sub to that too but they don't do share tokens Sad

jellybeansforbreakfast · 17/06/2021 17:38

One of the Twitter replies... should really sting

Did you actually read any of Jesse De Wahls’ statements that were considered hateful? Do you know she’s very close to her father who is a trans woman?

inmyslippers · 17/06/2021 17:42

Sorry for them mixed up

SirVixofVixHall · 17/06/2021 18:13

Prompted me to buy an embroidered patch that I had been looking at fir a while, her things are beautiful.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/06/2021 18:35

I’ve done some shopping too.

SnoopyLights · 17/06/2021 18:53

@Horizons83

Kind of related, but in the opposite way. I have noticed a lot of TERF stuff available on Etsy: Fuck TERFS, No TERFS beyond this point etc.

Etsy's own policies state this:

^Etsy prohibits the use of our Services to discriminate against people based on the following personal attributes (collectively, “protected groups”):

Race
Colour
Ethnicity
National origin
Religion
Gender
Gender identity
Sexual orientation
Disability
Any other characteristic protected under applicable law

It is your responsibility to know your local laws and any other legal regulations on discrimination that might apply to you.

Additionally, Etsy does not allow hate speech. Hate speech occurs when violent, offensive, derogatory or demeaning language is directed at a person or group based on their one or more protected group attributes.^

Is it worth a little pushback reporting items to Etsy and reminding them of the protected characteristic? Or is that just as bad as trying to cancel Jess? I don't think it is...

I may or may not have already started notifying Etsy on certain items...

If you haven't already seen it, you might want to look at what Caitlin Roper and Collective Shout have to say about Etsy.

A recent post on their Instagram:

"collective.shout
‘Your daughter does anal’: #DumpEtsy this Father’s Day

As if you needed more reasons to dump @etsy. We’ve spotted more merch with more porn-inspired slogans promoting the degradation of women and girls, flogged as ‘humour’ on the online global marketplace giant’s platform. This time, a range of hoodies and tees wielding the slogan ‘Your daughter does anal’ - styled with Pornhub’s black-and-gold branding.

We hear the devastating stories all the time: women and girls coerced or forced by men and boys into painful, humiliating sex acts. And Etsy wants to commodify their pain and humiliation and flog it as ‘jokes’?

Etsy wants your business this Father’s Day - June 20 for our US, UK + South Africa-based friends. Don’t give it to them!

Sign + share the petition calling on Etsy corporate heads to stop selling sexploitative, incest and child abuse themed merch."

SnoopyLights · 17/06/2021 19:08

I have emailed the RA with a copy of the Sex Matters letter and my comments.

I have followed Jess on social media for a while now. I will be buying something of hers. I'm hoping that The Famous Artist Birdy Rose does one of her fabulous illustrations of Jess and then I'll buy that as well.

I stand with Jess de Wahls. I stand with Maya. I stand with JK Rowling. I stand with Marion Millar. I stand with Women and Girls.

EishetChayil · 17/06/2021 19:19

I've just become a Patreon follower of Jess'. Her work is amazing.

hedgehogger1 · 17/06/2021 19:36

Loving the Twitter thread. Not gone their way has it

Significantly more than 8 people are not happy with them.
toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/06/2021 20:02

Gosh the RA have a lot of railings if they type that you could tie ribbons to. I hope noone does that.

Unsure33 · 17/06/2021 20:08

I have just read her beautifully written piece.

There is NO away her work should be withdrawn . Absolutely disgusting.

nothingcomestonothing · 17/06/2021 21:35

I've written to the RA, am looking forward to their response...

andthedogtoo · 17/06/2021 21:47

I love embroidery and have been following Jess for a while. She's such a talented artist and eloquent thoughtful woman who stands up for what she believes in and won't be bullied. I greatly admire her. I've also written to the RA. Wonder how long it'll take to get a reply. There's slightly more than 8 this time!

ValancyRedfern · 17/06/2021 21:48

I've written to the RA too. It oly takes a minute on their contact form. Let's show them how many of us there are!

TheFleegleHasLanded · 17/06/2021 21:52

If you missed GB News Andrew Neil at 8pm tonight be sure to record the repeat at midnight. Excellent segment on Jess, Maya, and JKR with Andrew Doyle about 5 minutes in; don’t miss it!

2Rebecca · 17/06/2021 22:00

Have just bought some lovely patches. I also love her pic of the female reproductive system done in flowers, beautiful.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 17/06/2021 22:21

Why are institutions so ready to allow people to demonise women and to placate the (overwhelmingly male) complainers?

Helen Staniliand was interesting about a complaint to the Halifax Library (Canada) about Abigail Shrier's book.

Let's just say that the library's response went far beyond putting up an note next to the book to explain why they had it (with a callback to my previous mention of this in UK) museums. Despite the frankly unbelievable lengths they went to - detailed in a screenshot of the frankly obeisant response - it wasn't enough for the complainant:

First, to frame this as "censorship" is utter bullshit. The library collection is a series of choices. Not every book makes it in. Most don't. Taking a harmful book out of circulation is in NO WAY censorship.
