The Royal Academy have removed Jess' work from their shop due to a handful of complaints that she's 'transphobic'. If you want to support Jess her website is here.

So sick of these utterly craven organisations. I hope she has a legal case against them for discrimination.

I wasn't either @NCwhatsmynameagain but that blog blew me away. It's so factual that I think it's very difficult to deny her thinking, and her right to think it!

JustcameoutGC · 17/06/2021 12:36

Thanks sex matters, nice to see you working for my new subscription made in honour of the Fawcett Society

everythingcrossed · 17/06/2021 12:52

@toffeebutterpopcorn

Hahahaha. I done a thing (my years at arts school didn’t fail me)...
I'm intrigued - what thing did you do?
IsThePopeCatholic · 17/06/2021 12:54

This is madness. I’ve contacted the RA. Looking forward to their response.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/06/2021 12:54

@Beamur

I think we should write and ask them if they are going to audit all of the artists that they stock and display to make sure purity is maintained. As that's obviously more important than artistic merit.
This. And maybe the British Library too, who would be left with far fewer books if they removed all those written by absolute shits of men. If people aren’t scared by this they are idiots.
SirVixofVixHall · 17/06/2021 12:57

The RA the new thought police?
Are they going to investigate the views of every single artist whose work they have for sale or on display ? Take the artists in for questioning, or check the background of the dead ones ?

accessorizequeen · 17/06/2021 12:58

Her blog had me nodding along. She went out of her way to be fair and still got jumped on. Her art is amazing.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 17/06/2021 13:01

And she sells stickers, which will be adorning bus stops around my town pretty soon.

Gutted the “women’s rights are not a hate” stickers are sold out

It's quite interesting that a number of museums/galleries now have notes next to an artwork that apologise for it and draw attention to implicit slavery/racism/erasure etc.
accessorizequeen · 17/06/2021 13:14

@Percyfish3rd

I refuse to accept the whole principle of so called transgenderism. You cannot change sex, you have no choice in which sex you are. Having said that, I have no problem with men dressing as women or vice versa, no matter how ridiculous they look . What really annoys me is the fact that they have now altered the English language to suit themselves. I don't have a fear of "transgender" people, which is what a phobia is. I just don't accept them.
I am deeply irritated by the compelled speech and being called cishet. But that's a minority of trans activists coming up with that kind of nonsense. But I do feel very empathetic with those who have gender dysphoria. And young kids caught up in this who are questioning their identity and sexuality. What about people who are gender non-conforming - can you accept them?
SirVixofVixHall · 17/06/2021 13:15

@Thelnebriati

Wait, is this even legal after the Maya ruling?
Good point.
Zeugma · 17/06/2021 13:20

The parade of utter witlessness continues. The servile crawling by the RA ('we appreciate you holding us to account on this issue') is actually stomach-turning.

On the plus side, there's a particularly succinct cartoon on that twitter thread featuring Eric Gill and two nervous-looking sheep.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 17/06/2021 13:21

Holding them to account? How fast were they to zap Jess from the first stamping of feet? I wonder how long any response to complaints will take?

Tanith · 17/06/2021 13:27

That statement misgenders Jess, too.

You’d think an organisation so keen to avoid offence would make some effort to get her pronouns right, at least!

HereForTheCakes · 17/06/2021 13:30

I've used the RA's web contact form to ask what their decision making process is for deciding "suitability" and how they will be applying it to their entire collection. Oh, and that I expect a response. Are they subject to FOI?

Siblingquandary · 17/06/2021 13:33

Either we're separating the art from the artist, or we're not.

Exactly @PurgatoryOfPotholes

This is the maddest thing I've read about so far today.

IvyTwines2 · 17/06/2021 13:35

@EmbarrassingAdmissions 'It's quite interesting that a number of museums/galleries now have notes next to an artwork that apologise for it and draw attention to implicit slavery/racism/erasure etc.'

But not the Barbican, when it came to an artwork hero-worshipping the woman-murderer and paedophile William Burroughs in the Basquiat exhibition a couple of years ago!

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 17/06/2021 13:38

The twitter thread is brilliant.

I'm learning a lot. For example.

#RADailyDoodle I drew a picture of Royal Academician Jeff Koons subjecting his wife to physical and emotional abuse.

You seem ok with this behaviour, but not with women speaking up for their rights. That seems a bit strange. Can you clarify

twitter.com/BigBillMoon/status/1405470055584964611?s=19

#RADailyDoodle I also doodled Royal Academician Georg Baselitz telling a group of female artists that “women can’t paint”.

Again, you seem happy with this belief of his, but not with women defending their sex-based rights. Why is that? t.co/ICJMgkuOEL

[quote SoMuchForSummerLove]This is an incredibly clear and exemplary piece of writing

That is the best piece of writing I've seen on whatgender critical means.

Degas was a raging anti Semite. Apparently he is OK.

Thank God for Sex Matters. Grin

Greenmarmalade · 17/06/2021 13:51

I’m so angry about this!

Can we call them up? What’s the best action here?
