The Royal Academy have removed Jess' work from their shop due to a handful of complaints that she's 'transphobic'. If you want to support Jess her website is here.

So sick of these utterly craven organisations. I hope she has a legal case against them for discrimination.

By twitter accounts... And the RA ‘buy back’ their apology with a single tweet from their comms mgr...(now protected)

‘Google: define ‘performative’

Oh dear. They just don’t get it do they? This dept needs a clear out.

Datun · 23/06/2021 13:31

The balance of reputational risk is shifted against virtue signaling cancellation. The RA’s reputation has been more damaged by cancelling JDW than it would have been by coming out in defence of freedom of expression from the beginning.

Great post chaz.

Maya Forstater has given people everywhere the courage to stick to their guns.

The fear is disappearing. People are more emboldened to challenge women's erasure.

Public opinion was always vital. And, although I think it was generally on the side of women, people were too frightened to say so.

Now that's changed.

RedDogsBeg · 23/06/2021 13:34

Of course he would, he’s a guy,” de Wahls says. “What is he doing wading in telling women what women are?”

Jess makes the most simple, compelling, accurate statements, she is brilliant just cuts through the crap. I want a version of that one on a T-shirt!

That's very poor. It completely undermines the integrity of the apology.
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 23/06/2021 13:38

"Sorry, not sorry" is not something I'd accept from my teenager, let alone a respected institution.

FFS.

Seems this apology was not really an apology, as the Comms Manager on Twitter said it had been" performative" Has of course now deleted it.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 23/06/2021 14:02

But the internet is forever! I think the RA may want to have a word with their comms team

Google: professional

Possibly also

Google:sacked for behaving like a tantruming toddler

RoyalCorgi · 23/06/2021 14:11

Judging by the comms manager's appalling tweet, I'm guessing there was a lot of argument between different factions about the wording of the apology. Probably the final wording was a compromise between those who wanted a strong apology and those who didn't want to apologise at all.

It's still amazing that, having agreed a party line, the comms manager, of all people, didn't adhere to it. In most organisations, generating a huge amount of bad publicity for your employer, and then sabotaging their attempt to smooth things over, would result in instant dismissal.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 23/06/2021 14:13

It’s amazing that someone thinks they are ‘bigger than the RA’ and can just basically torpedo what was a delicately balanced piece of crystal on top of a straw pillar.

Would the final decision have been down to the comms manager? They might just be expressing their feelings about the decision made. Still really unprofessional though
PurgatoryOfPotholes · 23/06/2021 14:22

I do hope that the comms manager's bio is a reference to a totally different screw up at work, and not the cancellation of Jess de Wahls.

*And they probably locked down their account because they knew they just dropped themselves in the shit.)

Cailleach1 · 23/06/2021 14:26

Wouldn't it be best now for the Royal Academy to clarify that they are not just going through performative motions in their acknowledge that it ought to be allowed free speech for a woman to state an objective biological fact?

In view of their oh so sanctimonious statement of only stocking the artists whose value they share, I will never be able to think of the organisation other than as apologists for child rape and animal abuse.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 23/06/2021 14:29

I hope Jess has made a mint out of this press coverage directing people to her website. I know I for one have made a purchase.

It’s not a reference to him screwing up; it’s a smug reference to a viral tweet he sent years ago when he was in a different job.

It’s him using his bio to go ‘I was that guy who did that hilarious thing — follow me’

PatsArrow · 23/06/2021 14:34

Jess getting threats now from the #bekind crowd. Misogyny with a nice bit of xenophobia thrown in for added nastiness.

Well, that's a relief! Bit sad he's resting on such insignificant laurels though.

Misogynistic xenophobia, such inclusive values.
