www.chimamanda.com/, published yesterday.

She is angry. One can understand why. One to watch I think.

Brilliantly written, but I’d expect nothing less from her.

To those who have not yet experienced her books, I’ve read and enjoyed:
Half of a yellow sun
We should all be feminists
Purple hibiscus
Americanah

All of them are worth your time.

MareofBeasttown · 16/06/2021 18:18

Here's the dirt. I work in publishing so am very interested in all of this:) www.voice-online.co.uk/entertainment/books/2020/11/18/akwaeke-emezi-non-binary-author-shares-heartbreak-at-chimamanda-ngozi-adichie/

Urgh what a nasty piece of work she is.

MareofBeasttown · 16/06/2021 18:35

I am glad I can talk about support for Chimamanda here because I would never be able to say this on my official Twitter. But yes, increasingly I am seeing that men are trying to prove they are women by urging that women who think otherwise be attacked with machetes.

OvaHere · 16/06/2021 18:41

Thank you @ScreamingMeMe

That certainly would be a fit.

MareofBeasttown · 16/06/2021 18:45
Does anyone know who Hadley and Helen are referring to in this thread?

twitter.com/HadleyFreeman/status/1405101367933509633
It is Ayesha Hazarika who has written a very milqetoast opinion piece about this. She is on the board of the Fawcett Society so I do expect her to stand up for women, otherwise she can quit. uk.news.yahoo.com/cruelty-hate-trans-debate-both-111825136.html

TedImgoingmad · 16/06/2021 18:46

Shades of "All About Eve" with this one.

OvaHere · 16/06/2021 18:47

Here's another tweet I spotted in the wild. Implying that such a thing as a biological woman exists is inherently transphobic. Hmm

I'm fairly sure the misogyny can be spotted from space by now.

Good grief, I expected something with a bit more backbone from Ayesha Hazarika. She's got a brain in her head.

SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 16/06/2021 19:18

The emails were necessary evidence of the sharp contrast between public face and private grovelling.

It's completely deranged.

HPFA · 16/06/2021 19:24

Might be that Hadley and Helen were also referring to this one:

She doesn't seem a well person.
rabbitwoman · 16/06/2021 19:35

I have always always said that the best way forward would be to hear both sides equally and allow the arguments to stand and fall on their own merits....

People aren't having it either. Oh dear, I think they may regret this!
SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 16/06/2021 19:41

Out of interest, has there been a thread on Feminism Chat about what a disappointment Caitlin Moran and her whole ‘how to wimminz’ schtick is?

TheHandmadeTails · 16/06/2021 19:42

Ayesha Hazarika was involved in drafting/getting through the 2010 Equality Act (iirc) which we’re all forever quoting from so I feel I can let that article pass, untrue and offensive though it may be.

Novelusername · 16/06/2021 19:46

Ugh, what a spoiled, self-important, narcissistic little brat this character sounds! I find her tweets so sickeningly self-important I can't even get through them - fat chance of ever finishing one of her books! I never knew it was possible to feel so bored and so repulsed at the same time. Chimamanda, on the other hand, is wonderfully eloquent.

TheHandmadeTails · 16/06/2021 19:46

What did Helen Lewis say about Glinner, can anyone fill me in?

ArabellaScott · 16/06/2021 19:51

Several.
SimonedeBeauvoirscat · 16/06/2021 19:52

Thanks @ArabellaScott will go and have a look.

WinterTrees · 16/06/2021 20:00

She sat there and made a decision to deliberately target a Black, queer, disabled, trans author during their launch week, ironically in a book in which I speak openly about how book launches often end in suicidality for me

Oppression bingo full house! (Or - translation: Behold my array of special characteristics, which render me beyond reproach and enable me to behave like a spoiled, entitled, backstabbing brat without any comeback.)

OldTurtleNewShell · 16/06/2021 20:03

I think the below has to be the most ridiculous response I've seen to her essay.

You have to be mind-numbingly arrogant to be a wealthy white American male actor and think it's your place to 'educate' a black Nigerian feminist writer- one of the finest intellectual minds of our time no less- on what intersectionality is. Absolutely gobsmacking.

I think Anthony Rapp needs bloody cancelling for mansplaining intersectionality to Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie.

You can see that rich white male actor knows he's talking to someone who's black and a woman, can't you. It just oozes out.

Let's look at Rapp's academic qualifications.

Wikipedia: Rapp participated in community theater as a child[6]and won awards for his singing in junior high school.[7]Rapp attended high school atJoliet West High Schooland theatre camp atInterlochen Arts Campin Michigan.[8]He moved to New York in 1989 to attendNew York Universityas a film student, but dropped out after a semester.[6]Rapp has been a friend of comicAndy Dicksince childhood.[9]

Chimamanda's qualifications and awards are about two miles long. If I copied and pasted hers, you'd petition MBHQ to delete my post for being too long!
