Wakefield MP candidate
uk.newschant.com/politics/abuse-victim-sues-lib-dems-after-ten-year-ban-over-trans-women-arent-women-stance/

"The mother of two, who escaped an abusive companion, was first investigated in 2018 after activists complained about her “troublesome” opposition to opening women’s refuges to males who really feel they’re women, with out safeguards for rape and home violence victims."

“Within day to day life I’ve got trans friends, and if you’ve got somebody who wants to be treated as a woman socially, I believe everybody should do that, be polite and give them their preferred name"

Good on her.

I hope she wins. Sending love.

Datun · 11/06/2021 23:38

Crikey. I assumed there would be lawyers rubbing their hands together. I didn't expect it to kick off the very next day.

@Datun

Crikey. I assumed there would be lawyers rubbing their hands together. I didn't expect it to kick off the very next day.

I've a suspicion that quite via few lawyers have been "holding" these cases awaiting the Maya decision and that not only has the dam burst but some will absolutely want to set some career defining legal precedents (if they can) on the back of it.

On that basis it's now first past the post....

DeRigueurMortis · 11/06/2021 23:43

typo "a" not "via" Blush

Melroses · 11/06/2021 23:46

I didn't realise they would be lining up so soon, but its not surprising when you think about it.

There must be so many.

Hope she wins.

RedToothBrush · 11/06/2021 23:47

The Times investigated what happened to her and the story matched what I know from another source.

Do I think she will win? I'm not sure. Political parties have rules which are unique. The LDs have a massive ongoing problem with bullying and intimidation. People in high places know about it, but shut up after acknowledging it.

I also believe the party will struggle more and more to get general election candidates. At the last election they had more difficulty than they will publicly admit to get candidates. You have to pass an approval process to be a PCC. They were trying to get PCCs to sign up to new terms and conditions last time I heard too. Ones which the the former PCC for Caerphilly should fail. Yet they still hold executive seats in the LDs.

I will definitely be watching with much interest.

Makes sense. The ruling was so clear, and there have been so many examples of bad treatment, that they should be easy wins.

And the ruling has been long-awaited, and the win was expected, so of course they'd be ready to go.

Just never occurred to me it would move this fast :)

I signed up for this expecting the precedent to be set, but expected a bit more of a slog. I guess the appeal gave extra planning time and publicity.

Wouldn't have been a next-day thing if it went her way immediately, and the precedent wouldn't have been so strong, would it?

OvaHere · 11/06/2021 23:59

I would like to see Andy Healey take on the Greens. He may not want to of course but that would be an interesting case!

DeRigueurMortis · 12/06/2021 00:01

Exactly.

A lot of lawyers have had plenty of time of getting their ducks in a row as it was widely anticipated in legal circles that Maya would win.

Having won, I don't think it's surprising that many cases are ready to go.

To use a car analogy they've done a full service and changed the oil/tyres - Maya's success put the fuel in the tank.

CardinalLolzy · 12/06/2021 00:07

That first link is making me feel like I'm actually going mad.
"It comes after a choose dominated on Thursday that saying trans women will not be actual women is a perception that “must be tolerated”, because the tax knowledgeable Maya Forstater received an employment tribunal enchantment after being sacked for “offensive” tweets. "

Does that site run text through a thesaurus or something?

NecessaryScene · 12/06/2021 00:12

Grin That's amazing. Too poetic for mere auto-translate failure, surely?

I do like "the tax knowledgeable Maya Forstater".

Yesterday on Triggernometry she was "Maya Forstater, twisted Maya Forstater".

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 12/06/2021 00:13

Cardinal (sorry I'm not stalking you!) Yes. It reads like a Google translation or a foreign disruptive site.
A screen shot or archived version of a reputable source would be good.

Orangecircling · 12/06/2021 00:15

It's ridiculous isn't it. We all know that men aren't women.
How the hell we got to this situation where it's such a fucking drama over what people can or can't say is truly beyond belief.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 12/06/2021 00:18

Good on her.

I hope she wins. Sending love.

My thoughts exactly.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 12/06/2021 00:27

LDs have a significant misogyny problem too, there is a woman in Edinburgh who was going to stand who bailed because of the way she was treated.

Which was badly.

StellaAndCrow · 12/06/2021 00:53

Wow, I wonder if tax-knowledgeable Maya knows that she's getting an employment tribunal enchantment? I didn't realise that was one of the possible outcomes!

AnyOldPrion · 12/06/2021 07:02

From the Telegraph:

A Lib Dem spokesman said: “The party is currently carrying out multiple internal investigations involving Natalie Bird. As such, we cannot comment further until the investigations are complete.”

Unless they’re actively investigating the discrimination Natalie Bird has suffered, and looking into those who have been attacking her, this statement comes across as deeply troubling.

Best of luck to her in her case. The recent judgment implied that more cases would be necessary to establish how the protected gender-critical views might legally be expressed. I hope that such cases will immediately put a stop to ludicrous actions such as removal of women from political parties or public spaces for wearing clothing that states that women are adult human females.

MrsBertBibby · 12/06/2021 07:19

My guess is it's a way of avoiding copyright breach claims, but it's hilarious!

"A choose dominated" foxes me. Dominated was ruled, but what on earth has been turned into "choose"?

JuneJustRains · 12/06/2021 07:24

Choose = judge, I think

JuneJustRains · 12/06/2021 07:24

And leaves those poor foxes out of it!

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 12/06/2021 07:29

The Lib Dems have always had a very significant gay membership and it seems to me (anecdotally) that gay men are much more empathetic towards trans women than towards us boring old cervix-havers.

MrsBertBibby · 12/06/2021 07:34

Aaaah judge!

TheHandmadeTail · 12/06/2021 08:00

the tax knowledgeable Maya Forstater received an employment tribunal enchantment

I think this is JKR’s influence.

MsMarvellous · 12/06/2021 08:03

There's some digging to be done for Natalie Bird if you search crowd justice.

nauticant · 12/06/2021 08:08

it seems to me (anecdotally) that gay men are much more empathetic towards trans women than towards us boring old cervix-havers.

It's something I often notice. The problem though is that saying this exposes someone to an accusation of homophobia.
