I thought you might be interested in the new statue of Emily Davison, the Suffragette who threw herself under the King's horse in 1913.
It's by Christine Charlesworth and is now set up in Epsom town centre.

This is great. She deserves a statue and it is a good one too. Not only does she have clothes on but it looks like her. Lovely that her family were at the unveiling.

We're very much in need of this statue.

My god - it’s an actual statue of a clothed woman? Not terminator barbie with diarrhoea.

That’s refreshing.

jellybeansforbreakfast · 09/06/2021 14:36

Clothed, recognisable, accessible. What went wrong?

CaveMum · 09/06/2021 15:04

I think they unveiled it on the actual anniversary, but it’s a shame there was nothing at Epsom Racecourse this weekend for the running of the Derby itself.

To be a pedant, they now don’t think she threw herself under the King’s horse - it’s believed she was attempting to pin a banner/rosette to the horse as he passed and was knocked down and trampled. Never the best idea to get in front of a moving horse, particularly not one running at 40mph!

So happy she has clothes on.

I love this.

It's lovely. Here's ours.

The statue of her in Morpeth is great, the purple and white flowers planted near the statue look lovely too.

ScreamingMeMe · 09/06/2021 17:13

Oh lovely!

That's beautiful! I'm a fan of realistic statues like this, and this one is very well done.

Yes, CaveMum, it's thought she had not intended to kill herself or risk injury. She never told anyone what she intended, but from the plans she made for later that day and week, it seems clear she had not expected to be injured.
