LOJ - things not going as planned

Just saw Owen Jones' latest facebook post - encouraging people to pre-order a book by Shon Faye called "The Transgender issue" and suggesting that the press are "waging war on trans people."

So far, so much the same.

www.facebook.com/100044175262126/posts/383548556460983/?sfnsn=scwspmo

But the comments on the post are largely very critical. People are asking whether the book presents both sides of the argument; they are highlighting the war on women; pointing out the importance of safeguarding ...

I've never seen this before - it's a huge change from the usual response.

Two deeply unpleasant people having a war on Facebook with sensible people is always entertaining.

Makeup for men by Sean Faye.

Aww , LOJ has his mum on backong him up . (Sorry , parent who has given birth). Those Shon Faye tweets are so grim .

irishfeminist · 08/06/2021 12:15

I remember when he got his mum on to Julie BindelGrin

This still makes me snort...

Poor old Owen, he saw himself as the pope of the new secular priesthood, turns out people prefer science to faith and reason to sermons.

SmokedDuck · 08/06/2021 13:39

He really does not seem to be able to get beyond the idea that this is identical to gay rights 40 years ago.

But then, they are saying the same thing about racism.

The thing is that these are actually all different. They share some elements, sure, but you can't just directly compare any of them, there are some real differences in every case.

Surely that's self-evident?

Floisme · 08/06/2021 14:06

To be fair, I can imagine that a gay man of OJ's generation might feel a huge debt to Stonewall, and be very reluctant to scrutinise that feeling.
I would however expect someone who earns their living by writing to be capable of seeing beyond that.

zanahoria · 08/06/2021 14:20

He cannot even produce any arguments, only analogies.

Sensible people may use analogies to back up an arument as a bit of literary flourish but it is plain dumb to use them to replace an argument.

It is moronic twitter style debate.

highame · 08/06/2021 14:25

I love it when we get a loj thread. I imagine him out there in an echo chamber, floating around and occasionally being whacked on the head with a bag of reasoned argument Grin

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

I'm also very taken with Talcum X, which I think is Julie Bindel's.
I like Talcum X too. I think it was first coined by Lucy Masoud from the Fire Brigade Union.
butwhatcanwedo · 08/06/2021 20:41

Check out his latest post...

zanahoria · 08/06/2021 21:02

It has been previously used for some American bloke

Tanith · 08/06/2021 22:57

"He is basically relying on the 'this is just like the homophobia of the 80s and 90s' line over and over again, which can be ripped apart in seconds by anyone with half a brain."

How on earth would he know? He was still in nappies!

InvisibleDragon · 08/06/2021 23:06

An organised campaign from Mumsnet??

Good lord.

OP posts:
Fallingirl · 08/06/2021 23:16

Obviously there has not been an “organised campaign” from mumsnet ir anywhere else. However, it is not the first time large numbers of women’s arguments have been dismissed by accusing the women of being organised.

Are only men allowed to organise? So what, if we had been organised?

nettie434 · 08/06/2021 23:46

@zanahoria

It has been previously used for some American bloke
I didn't know that but It's too good to limit its use to one bloke, zanahoria!
Weefatroaster · 09/06/2021 00:49

@irishfeminist
Oh I missed that! Must look it up ! Bet you Bindel tore shreds of her !!! Too funny !😂

SmokedDuck · 09/06/2021 01:26

I would say being mentioned in a thread and having people go over to look would be better described as a disorganised campaign.

But it's not like he's above a little organised campaigning himself. Sauce for the gander and all.

GAHgamel · 09/06/2021 01:31

It's not so much an organised campaign as a bout of rubbernecking from these quarters I think, given the backlash was already under way by the time it was mentioned here.

Mollyollydolly · 09/06/2021 02:00

I can't see the thread anymore, I recommended people buy Kathleen Stocks book in his replies, I think he's blocked me on Facebook now. I've got the double.

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 02:54

He's only 36 though. Born 84.

So 14 in what. 98.

I'm older than him by some margin and ok from London and also ok not gay but we had out kids at school, there were loads of gay clubs, it was you know. I mean the heavy lifting had been done in the 80s really and esp around hiv and aids bringing the topic to the fore. That was when the fighting happened I think mainly?

NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 02:58

He's just a bogstandard misogynist.

Worse even. He doesn't care about women enough to hate them. They're just not in his world view at all.

All he sees is men who he sees as part of his 'group' not getting what they want and that's infuriating. Mummy says no. Who the fuck does she think she is?!

DeRigueurMortis · 09/06/2021 03:39

Golly I'm part of an organised campaign!!!!

Who knew!

That's really exciting ....Hmm

Talcum really needs to dust himself off.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 09/06/2021 05:20

OJ trends every week on twitter. You'd think he would understand the concept of various people chatting about a post and then other people reading the chat and wandering over to have a look...
