His release is subject to a number of licence conditions.

These include living at a designated address, taking part in probation supervision, wearing an electronic tag, taking part in lie detector tests and having to disclose what vehicles he uses and who he speaks to, with particular limits on contact with children.

He will also be subject to a curfew, have restrictions on using technology and limits on where he can go.

So they clearly don't think he's 'rehabilitated'?

Does anyone know if these restrictions expire?

I am extremely interested in issues around crime and rehabilitation

I would like to think that many people can be rehabilitated given appropriate support

However when it comes to sadistic child rapist murderers like Mr Pitchfork I do not believe that it is safe to ever release such people.

I believe that it is extremely likely that he will offend again, by which time it will be too late and some other poor family's life will be destroyed.

I very much hope that he he is locked up until he dies for the protection of children and the wider public.

Feelinghothothottoday · 08/06/2021 14:00

@RoseRedRoseBlue

The same applies to men. Interestingly, it’s going up to £76 at some point this summer.
True but I bet Pitchfork is being helped at more than £76 a week.

Exactly this. You can’t teach people boundaries on rape, murder, child abuse etc.
RoseRedRoseBlue · 08/06/2021 14:03

I am sure he is, but I am not really clear how that’s relevant. The same could be said about anyone relying on the stage for support in some manner.

sashh · 08/06/2021 14:50

Once they are finished, there are no conditions on them. They have finished their time and the authorities have no rights to monitor them or anything else ,they can go what they want and do what they want.

He was given life so his time will never 'finish'.

alexdgr8 · 08/06/2021 15:56

he has already been out for day release or something.
his photograph was in a newspaper yesterday, as he looks now, out and about in bristol area.
so they have been planning his release for some time.
i've not heard of any one person who agrees with it.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 08/06/2021 18:24

It’s called ROTL - Release on Temporary Licence. It’s part of a whole process and is not necessarily indicative of impending release.

Zzelda · 08/06/2021 18:46

@CowString

What the hell? He should be hung. Not released
How would we manage that? Happily we don't have the death sentence.
BrandineDelRoy · 08/06/2021 18:52

@NiceGerbil

That's a really grim post. Why bring up enjoyment on a thread like this? It's made me feel really queasy, too much.

And what do you mean about north American? You mean the scandal that various states had thousands upon thousands of untested samples?

There was a lot in the news even over here.

If you think it's great they're getting through the backlog and nicking some sex offenders decades after they could have got them..

Yay?

I like that rapists are getting caught based on semen. I'm not sure why you're cricizing me.
BrandineDelRoy · 08/06/2021 18:57

I've killed bugs and a few fish to eat. I had to kill a bird once that my cat had horribly injured. I've never killed a mammal. Killing a human is unthinkable. Men like him who do it don't just not think it's unthinkable, they orgasm over it.

That is not something that can be rehabilitated.

BrandineDelRoy · 08/06/2021 19:02

@EsmaCannonball

I don't get why the use of 'enjoyment' is controversial. These are not crimes of desperation or necessity; these are crimes committed for entertainment. There are men who think a woman's life is worth less than one of their orgasms. Men who are proven to think this way are too dangerous for society.
Thank you.
NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 00:34

Brandon's I had a visceral reaction to that, personally.

Thinking on it more. I suppose that it's about sexual pleasure and rape. Mutual sexual pleasure is one thing. Rape is something else. It's not about sexual enjoyment really. It's about power. Taking because you can. Degrading. Hurting. Enjoyment isn't a word I use for those things i suppose. Yes sadists enjoy inflicting pain and it turns them on but it's not the same as I dunno. Going for a nice walk or winning at pool or something.

Also men who can't ejaculate still rape if that's their thing.

I can't explain but it made me ick a lot. I suppose the image conjured that this man took active pleasure in what he did to those girls just made my stomach turn.

On the USA semen historic cases thing though. I can't feel as excited about it as you given the massive scandal about it. I suppose better late than never but... It's not exactly a victory is it. These men could have been caught years ago.

I think we need to agree to disagree.
NiceGerbil · 09/06/2021 03:23

Sure on the first part that was my personal reaction.

I'm really interested in why you think the USA thing is a win though, considering the background.

It was about the forensic genetic genealogy that's been solving cold cases here.
NiceGerbil · 10/06/2021 20:55

Oh ok not about the scandals of the thousands of rape kits sitting untested in certain areas.

I don't know what happened with that.

Your comment makes sense now.

For anyone interested in that scandal of injustice against sexual violence victims-

2019 www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2019/07/nationwide-epidemic-of-untested-rape-kits-atlantic-daily/594046/

Across the country, as many as 200,000 rape kits sit unopened in police storage while assailants—the people whose genetic fingerprints are decisively coded within such kits—are able to dodge prosecution and, in some cases, strike again. Our latest magazine cover story is an investigation by Barbara Bradley Hagerty into the national backlog of untested rape kits—and its frightening consequences. Amid an ongoing national conversation about serial sexual abusers and how to deal with them, it’s an in-depth look at some of the ways the system fails to catch repeat offenders. Read the full story here.

When kits go untested, sexual predators can flourish. In one Detroit case, an assailant struck 11 times over 11 years, all while his DNA sat with police. And it took a serial killer, one who had been previously convicted of rape, for Cleveland’s police department to begin testing its backlog. (Officers even tested the kit of a victim who managed to escape, but not for DNA evidence: Instead, they checked for drugs in her system.)

Totally. I'm so happy that forensic genealogy is solving decades old rapes and murders in the US.

I'm guessing ancestry type things are not as attractive for Europeans.

NiceGerbil · 10/06/2021 21:51

Do you have a link about the genealogy stuff? Sounds interesting.

I think you probably understand now why I was confused as to how it was a win- cross purposes.

I don't understand the European comment, can you expand on that?

NiceGerbil · 10/06/2021 21:54

Ah found it!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suspected_perpetrators_of_crimes_identified_with_GEDmatch

Family tree DNA stuff is popular over here. I don't think they do that many tests on it though. I know loads of people who have done it.

It would be against our data protection laws and if the police wanted access there would be a massive public outcry.

NiceGerbil · 10/06/2021 21:55

I didn't mean to be anti European at all. I'm totally European but in North America.

I like that men are getting caught for crimes decades ago because their fourth cousin once uploaded a dna profile into an ancestry database.

BrandineDelRoy · 10/06/2021 22:40

@NiceGerbil

Do you know what happened with the rape kit scandal?
I don't. This country is huge and divided j to 50 different federal units.
Alicethruthelookingglass · 11/06/2021 00:02

Who the fuck is going to trust a sexual sadist with any potentially vulnerable person?!?!

No one. That is why most institutions that hire for caretaking vulnerable populations do extensive background checks. They might forgive a rap for petty theft or a pot bust in someone's youth, but they would not countenance a convicted rapist/murderer.

This is why I'm very concerned about the ability to track name and birth cert sex changes of known criminals when they cross the gender line. They should not be able to do that legally if they have felony convictions, it just obfuscates their identity, makes them harder to track and gives them a fresh chance to reoffend.

NiceGerbil · 11/06/2021 02:48

Brandon's I had a look and have some info. As it's a topic you're interested in I thought it would be good to share. The scandal was across pretty much everywhere and sadly seems still ongoing.

Here's the org set up about it
www.endthebacklog.org/backlog/what-rape-kit-backlog

Here's a bit of info from Google. It was a massive story so there is plenty of info when you search. From what I've read it's still an issue. When they start on the backlog (some kits more than 20 years old) they are finding matches on the DNA database and also serial perpetrators.

It's just so upsetting.

ualr.edu/socialchange/2021/03/31/the-injustice-of-americas-rape-kit-backlog/

'In 2011, the National Institute of Justice conducted research projects in Detroit and Houston to explore the issue of unsubmitted rape kits in each city. The Detroit project’s results showed that 28 percent of the kits tested during the course of the project contained a DNA profile matching one that was already in CODIS. From this they were able to identify 127 serial assaults from the total 1,595 kits that were tested. That is 127 survivors whose assaults could have been prevented, and that number is just from one portion of one city’s untested kits.'
