Victim blaming headline

Stumbled across this when reading a different story linked from FWR but does anyone else find this headline appalling? Marta Elena is not dead because she smiled “the wrong way.” She is dead because the system failed to deal with a dangerous man.

It's infuriating!

Also, what is Travelodge doing to protect its employees who are often left working alone overnight?

Appalling reporting - however not a surprise.

Whether the victim or in attacking in self defence, it’s always the woman that caused it.

That poor woman.

There are far too many of these cases of schizophrenia where the medical and psychological side have failed to clock the warning signs. Far too much trust in patients managing their own meds even though paranoid delusions would play a part in whether they took them or not.
Too many members of the public are becoming the victims of the poor management of these individuals and no one ever seems to be held accountable.
Poor family knowing it should have been prevented.

Yes I saw that and thought that too, although what pisses me off the most is the passive voice that is always used in these cases and which hides the subject/perpetrator’s role.

There is another headline in that paper:

Woman punched to ground in racist attack.

I was beginning to think that they only knew how to talk in the passive voice until I saw:

Hero boy swims to save his family
Teen saves family dogs from bear

It’s odd to say the least.

The news is full of cautionary tales for women!

BBC News site has
"Tributes to mother and son found dead in house".

tentosix · 02/06/2021 20:46

Should read, woman beaten to death by mentally ill man failed by the system.

That one is more acceptable to me as I imagine it is necessary not to prejudice any trial - but the case of Marta Elena the killer has been convicted so there is no need for words that don’t attribute blame.

He was staying in the hotel. Think it was homeless housing and that's same housing councils want to put you if victim of domestic violence especially if no children or children grown up so hope people understand why some of us don't leave. Not safe living in same place as violent men.

Councilworker · 03/06/2021 01:50

This was down the road from my sister. It's not used by the council for homeless accommodation, the man's parents paid for him to stay there.
That poor woman, I feel so sad that her last moments were so terrifying and brutal. The metro headline is a disgrace. She was just a young woman at work doing her job and she was killed because other people weren't doing theirs properly and a dangerous man was left in the community

MargaritaPie · 03/06/2021 02:29

Mental health is underfunded. And look what happens because of that.

ExitChasedByABee · 03/06/2021 03:03

That is so sad Sad I read the article and agree with Angela Morris, the judge:

Sentencing Cole, Judge Morris told him: ‘How this young woman, who had all of her life ahead of her, came to be in your path on that fateful morning is a combination of circumstances and an irreversible failure by some to spot the signs of your psychiatric deterioration, despite you and your father trying to obtain the anti-psychotic medication you so desperately needed.’
