HISTORY OF PRIDE MONTH
On a hot summer’s night in New York on June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, which resulted in bar patrons, staff, and neighborhood residents rioting onto Christopher Street outside. Among the many leaders of the riots was a black, trans, bisexual woman, Marsha P. Johnson, leading the movement to continue over six days with protests and clashes. The message was clear — protestors demanded the establishment of places where LGBT+ people could go and be open about their sexual orientation without fear of arrest.

Pride Month is largely credited as being started by bisexual activist Brenda Howard. Known as ‘The Mother of Pride,’ Brenda organized Gay Pride Week and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade a year after the Stonewall Riots. This eventually morphed into what we now know as the New York City Pride March and was the catalyst for the formation of similar parades and marches across the world.

Here are first hand accounts:

that show that the version you've heard OP is a rewriting of history for political purposes. This video is from the NY Times, a publication that often goes out of its way to support trans activism.

In short, no. Marsha was entirely open about (a) being a boy and (b) not even being there when the riot started.

But the TRAs never seem to take it on board.

EmphaticPeriod · 01/06/2021 10:49

Storme DeLarverie kicked things off
Marsha P Johnson turned up 50 minutes later
Sylvia Rivera wasn't there at all

is my understanding
but
the latter were allies to LGB at a time when T was not seen as erasing owt.

Outbutnotoutout · 01/06/2021 10:53

Thank you 😊 I knew it was wrong

I shall challenge

Marsha, a drag queen, wasn't trans and by his own admission, wasn't even there when it all started. In fact, Storme DeLarvarie, a black lesbian is credited with shouting out to the crowd to do something as she was being arrested.

You do have to wonder though - why the compulsive lying?

I guess they think the marginal gain from getting a significant number of people to believe it outweighs the huge loss of respect from those who notice the lies. They assume not that many people will notice the lies.

But eventually the lying on multiple issues becomes a visible pattern, and the whole thing starts to crumble. People might miss one lie, but when there are so many...

WeeBisom · 01/06/2021 12:05

It’s not true. Stonewall inn was apparently not a very friendly place to drag queens and trans people and its main clientele was white men and a few lesbians. If you look at the limited photos of the riots you can see it .Marsha turned up much later when the riot has already happened.

I don’t like how this lie has over the years morphed from “Marsha started the riot” (when the orthodox account is it was storme) to “trans women of colour are literally the only reason we have gay rights today so you had better be grateful.”

dolorsit · 01/06/2021 12:20

It's probably worth noting that the "trans" people who were involved with the gay rights movement were not being "allies" in the current sense of the word, ie being supportive of other people.

They would have been considered by the law of the land and society in general to be same sex attracted. They were fighting for their own rights.

This is really interesting, thank you all
Article by Fred Sargeant about the Stonewall riots:

lesbianandgaynews.com/2021/05/jo-bartosh-meets-legendary-us-gay-rights-campaigner-fred-sargeant-we-need-a-new-movement-of-gay-lesbian-and-bisexual-people-run-for-and-by-ourselves/
Fred wasn't at the riots either. He gave an interview where he said he was walking home from dinner and saw the riots when they were already happening.

I have passed the article on to them and ask them to repost the correct info

Where was the article you quoted published, Outbutnotoutout?

I keep reading myths about trans people having long been leaders of the LGB movement, and each time people patiently retell the truth.

I suppose transactivists like making up stories that put the trans movement in a good light. They seem to be doing this more and more often. I wonder if that's since people have started seeing the harm being done to women's right and child safeguarding?

Outbutnotoutout · 02/06/2021 07:58

It was a Facebook group/large hobby

I think that a fair number of people now consider drag queens to be trans. So they don't question it, or make assumptions.
