Organisations Leaving Stonewall: The List

Barracker · 29/05/2021 19:50

Thought it would be handy to keep a running list here of organisations who have done 'budget reviews' or similar and have subsequently decided that Stonewall are 'not value for money'.

EHRC
ACAS
House of Commons
DVLA
Dorset Police
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

Do feel free to update the thread as more join the exodus.

Libby Purves in the Times today

Stonewall’s word-policing only breeds more hate.

It was archived on the 19th May, just before they took it down:

Thanks!
That says it was "Published 10 August 15" at the top, so I thought it was from then, not recent.

I missed that Blush. In which case that is rather dishonest of them, and interesting that they didn't keep it updated.

I would love to see a graph of number of diversity champions against time. There's been things recently saying that x actually left Stonewall a while ago maybe orgs haven't been a oblivious as we thought?

Which maybe why the list wasn't updated. Hmm

Though I wondered if they were adding new sign ups but not removing those who left as Marie Curie state in their annual report for 2020 that they have just signed up last year, but they are on the list hence me digging and writing to them. 🤷‍♀️

In my own little act of rebellion I have removed the compulsory Stonewall logo from my email signature at work today. Really hoping my employer will drop Stonewall altogether but in the meantime, if anyone challenges me, this forum has helped me prepare a very good argument. Thanks mumsnetters!

SpindleWhorl · 07/06/2021 14:01

Why do these charities and businesses never talk of their 'work' with all of the protected characteristics?

Stonewall have released a statement. Basically, .. those pesky women.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 07/06/2021 19:51

Can anybody explain this paragraph or give an example of cases being thrown out as unarguable, please?

A number of groups have launched legal challenges to public sector organisations regarding their work with Stonewall, with case after case being thrown out as ‘unarguable

Chrysanthemum5 · 07/06/2021 19:52

Thanks @Mollyollydolly I see they are encouraging organisations to go 'above and beyond' the law again.

Chrysanthemum5 · 07/06/2021 19:54

And their statements are easy to check. They insist they haven't suggested removing 'mother' as a term. So if anyone has that noted in their feedback from stonewall that shows they are lying

rogdmum · 07/06/2021 19:57

North Lanarkshire Council’s removal is rather marvellous as they are one of the 16 Scottish Council’s that endorse the current LGBT Youth Scotland guidance to schools. Perhaps they will now review that endorsement...

Lovetomato · 07/06/2021 20:02

Content aside, that reads like it was written by someone unfamiliar with writing statements/reports. Quite clunky in its attempt to be conversational and slightly informal but not quite pulling it off. I wonder if their ‘u OK hun?’ person was involved?

AnotherLass · 07/06/2021 20:19

My guess is that Stonewall have been adding members but not taking them off for years.

When the FOI campaign got going they suddenly realised that a lot of organisations were going to be saying that they had left, while the website would still show them as members. So they panicked and hid the list behind a login.

SpindleWhorl · 07/06/2021 20:25

Sloppy of Stonewall, if true. Misleading their customers, one might say.

teawamutu · 07/06/2021 21:29

The appalling evidence of oppression... Nearly 900 FOI letters sent to organisations.

Or, two or three each for all the alleged (by Stonewall) diversity scheme public sector members.

None of which Stonewall should have been involved in answering.

O, the humanity.

PandorasMailbox · 07/06/2021 21:44

[quote WarriorN]Btw, slightly off tangent, I've just come across this very useful collation of info on stonewall in recent years via various articles and situations

It’s June 2021 – Pride month – and how better to mark it than with a new page celebrating Stonewall UK?

"This page is for links to stories about the once great UK charity for gay men and lesbians, which is now set on a kamikaze mission to alienate as many as possible. There seems to be rather a lot of such stories at the moment, for some reason.

Dawn Butler’s Twitter poll didn’t quite produce the result she expected either. Oh dear, how sad, never mind"

Kamikaze mission really does sum up Stonewall's stance on the current situation Grin

TRHR · 07/06/2021 21:49

@Helen8220

Sorry for derailing, I’ll make this my last post. Just wanted to express support for the stonewall scheme. For the handful of organisations that have left the scheme (and in the case the public sector, I suspect in most cases genuinely due to budget pressures) there are many more that still value it.
Helen you're not derailing, you're giving thoughtful first hand experience, and were criticised by people who hate reading anything they disagree with (which would make this an echo chamber, not a genuine forum). My employer also supports Stonewall and it's been really educational and thought provoking as a cis straight woman who wouldn't otherwise know what the lgbt community needs.
Paralithic · 07/06/2021 21:50

Sarah Phillimore has, erm, demolished this statement.

It is a thing of beauty.

TRHR · 07/06/2021 21:51

Yes this was the Anne Siddot case - it's against the EA 2010 to exclude trans people from toilets, as gender identity is a protected characteristic.

Erm - no, and no it’s not.

  1. No, it isn't.
